64 people confirmed dead in fire in Siberian shopping mall


Sixty-four bodies have now been recovered from the ruins of a shopping mall in eastern Russia, following a fire.

The mall was packed with children and parents when the fire started.


Firefighters have finished searching the four floors of that mall in Kemerovo after finally extinguishing the flames on Monday morning.


Investigators are now looking for possible causes for the tragedy.


Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have sent condolences to their Russian counterparts, saying China is mourning for the victims, their families and those injured.


WTO members concerned over U.S. safeguard measures against solar cells


Six WTO members, including the EU and China, have expressed concern over the safeguards imposed by the United States against imported solar cells and residential washers.


The U.S. administration decided in January to impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on imported washers for the next three years, and up to 30 percent on solar cells and modules for the next four years.


China initiated Monday's discussion during a meeting at the WTO by saying that the measures were inconsistent with international trade rules and WTO agreements.


China's standpoint is echoed by the EU, which noted that the U.S. had not used this measure in almost 15 years.


Chinese vice premier calls for closer cooperation with World Bank


China has said it's ready to enhance cooperation with the World Bank.


Vice Premier Han Zheng has made the remark, while meeting with World Bank Chief Executive Officer Kristalina Georgieva.

Han thanked the World Bank for supporting China in poverty reduction, environmental protection and innovation.


He called on both sides to cooperate more on rural revitalization, ecological advancement and the Belt and Road Initiative.


Georgieva expressed appreciation for China's contribution to the World Bank and global poverty reduction, voicing willingness for cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative and more.


China, India pledge to boost trade, economic cooperation


China and India have pledged to further enhance their trade and economic cooperation.


Addressing a bilateral economic and trade meeting in New Delhi, Chinese Commerce Minister Zhong Shan says both sides have closely cooperated and supported each other in the multilateral trading system and regional economic cooperation.


He also says closer China-India cooperation helps safeguard a new international economic order and the interests of developing countries.


The trade volume between China and India reached a record high of 84.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 20.3 percent from the previous year.


China defends foreign waste import ban


China has defended its policy on banning the imports of solid waste.


This comes after a U.S. official expressed concerns that the ban could cause a fundamental disruption in global supply chains for scrap materials.

In response, a Chinese government spokesperson says banning the imports of solid waste is an important measure China has taken to promote the new development concept, improve environmental quality and safeguard people's health.


The official adds that every country has the right to ban the entry of foreign hazardous waste and other sorts of waste, which is in line with an international convention over trans-boundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal.


Kremlin says Putin to decide on response to diplomat expulsions


A Kremlin spokesman has said Russia regrets the decision by Western governments to expel Russian diplomats over the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain, and Moscow's response will be based on the principle of reciprocity.


The spokesman says Russian President Vladimir Putin would make the final decision about how Russia responds to the expulsions.


Russia's ambassador to the United States has said the U.S. decision to expel Russian diplomats was "wrongful" and was destroying what little remained of U.S.-Russian ties.


German court keeps exiled Catalan leader Puigdemont in custody


A German court has extended the detention of former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, pending a decision by a higher court on whether to extradite him to Spain.


Puigdemont has been in exile in Belgium since leaving Spain last October in order to avoid facing charges of sedition and rebellion.

The detention came after the Spanish Supreme Court on Friday reactivated a European detention order for Puigdemont and six other Catalan separatist leaders.


Scientist advises Africa to learn from China for scientific advances


African scientists have called on the continent to learn from China's rapid rise in the areas of education, science and technology for its own development.


African Institute for Mathematical Sciences says Africa should draw inspiration from the development milestones of China in order to be one of the major contributors to world science.


Neil Turok, founder of the institute, called on African economies to focus, prioritize and promote science and technology ideas to solve socio-economic challenges.


The scholar's remark come as part of the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) global gathering 2018 in Kigali, capital of Rwanda.
