Enrollment Guide for the Summer Program on
“An Overview of Modern China and City Development” (2023)
BISU Introduction
Beijing International Studies University (BISU) was founded in 1964 and is a renowned institution of higher education of multi-disciplines, offering subjects and courses of literature, management, economics, and philosophy, with foreign languages and tourism as its dominant disciplines. It is an important base in China for teaching and research in the fields of foreign languages, translation, tourism, economics and trade.
BISU enrolls an average of over 1,500 international students from all over the world each year, including master's students, undergraduate students, preparatory students, and visiting students. The university holds short-term courses on Chinese language, Chinese culture and “An Overview of Modern China and City Development” every summer. Located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, the university is adjacent to the Central Business District (CBD) on its west and Beijing Municipal Administration Center (Tongzhou District) on its east. BISU has a superior location with convenient transportation and a charming campus environment. The university’s website is www.bisu.edu.cn.
Program Features
The program “An Overview of Modern China and City Development” will provide international students with a panoramic understanding of modern China including China's development practices and achievements. It adopts a "lecture + visiting" model, which combines classroom learning with field trips and internship practice. This approach, which is more vivid and realistic, will further promote exchange and mutual learning amongst international students.
Program Schedule
The summer course will be held for two weeks from August 6th (Sunday) to August 18th (Friday), 2023.
1. Class Time
Monday to Friday
9:00 AM-12:00 PM (indoor thematic teaching)
2:00 PM-5:00 PM (field trips/outdoor practical teaching)
2. Course Arrangements
(1) Monday to Friday: lectures make up 50% of the total course hours, while field trips/outdoor practical teaching and internships make up the remaining 50%.
(2) Saturday & Sunday: Cultural and historical site visits in and around Beijing.
(3) The intended destinations for practical teaching include Shougang (Capital Steel) Industrial Park, Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, Municipal Administration Center (Beijing Sub-center), and Xiong'an New Area. The intended destinations for internships include governmental departments, community service centers, industrial parks, Beijing local enterprises and communities. The intended destinations for cultural and historical site visits include the Great Wall, the Palace Museum, the National Museum of China, and the China Science and Technology Museum.
Application Qualifications
1. Application Requirements
(1) Applicants must be between 22 and 50 years old and physically healthy. A bachelor’s or master’s degree or above is preferred.
(2) The recruitment targets include university students and teachers, government officials, enterprise management staff, etc.
(3) Admission priority will be given to those who apply first and enjoy highest level of academic background.
2. Language Requirements
(1) Applicants are capable of taking class in English or hold a minimum score of TOEFL (PBT) 550, TOEFL (iBT) 80, IELTS 6.0, or equivalent.
(2) Applicants from English-speaking countries or whose degree program is taught in English are exempt from the English language proficiency proof.
(3) Applicants from BISU partner universities can be exempt from the English language proficiency proof by providing an English proficiency certificate of B2 level or above from their home universities.
3. Application Materials
A photocopy of the passport or residence permit, a resume (in English), the highest degree certificate, the academic transcript of the highest degree, and the English language proficiency proof.
Application Process
1. Application
(1) Overseas applicants are kindly requested to log into the BISU's Online Service System (http://apply.bisu.edu.cn/) to apply. The application period is from May 25th to July 5th, 2023, and the application languages are Chinese or English. In addition to filling out the online information, applicants should upload the required attachments as requested. The uploaded attachment materials should be color scanned copies, and the original documents should be kept for backup checking upon arrival.
(2) Applicants from within China (international students already in China) do not need to apply online. Instead, they only need to fill out the “Application Form for An Overview of Modern China and City Development” Summer Program for International Students" and send the scanned copies of the required application materials (including valid X1 or X2 visa) to the email address study@bisu.edu.cn for registration. The original copies of the documents should be kept for backup checking after enrollment. The application period is from May 25th to July 25th, 2023.
(3) Applicants should provide truthful, accurate, complete, and effective information when filling out the application.
2. Review
BISU will review the application materials, and applicants can log into the BISU's Online Service System for International Students to check the application progress and related notifications during this period.
3. Acceptance
After review, BISU will send out an “Admission Notice” before July 15th. Applicants should bring the “Admission Notice” and "Certificate of Physical Examination" to the Chinese embassy or consulate to apply for the X2 visa. Specific requirements are subject to the requirements of the Chinese embassy or consulate.
4. Registration
(1) Newly enrolled students should register according to the time specified on the admission notice. Before registration, students should purchase insurance by themselves through the website (https://lxbx.net/home).
(2) Before entering China, students must confirm the specific school-entry date and related requirements with BISU Business School contact person via email below. Students may only enter the campus after the Business School agrees so accommodation can be arranged.
(3) Upon registration, please bring the admission notice, original application materials, and five 2-inch white background passport photos.
Fee Standards
BISU will provide full financial support for tuition, accommodation fees, and visiting expenses within the program. Other expenses, such as living expenses, visa fees, and round-trip travel expenses, will be covered by students themselves.
