most representative projects

There is for example the first built project I have designed: Only a rather small, single storey complex for retail in some north German town, it features many aspects which are important for me: typological simplicity, visible construction and structural details, natural surfaces, optimized daylight intake and natural ventilation using a chimney effect, plus a hybrid public space defined by the architecture.

我设计的第一个建成项目在德国北部城镇,虽然只是一个相当小的单层综合零售区,但它在许多方面对我的设计观来说都很重要:类型简单、可见的建筑和结构细节、自然表面、利用烟囱效应优化采光和自然通风,以及由建筑定义的混合公共空间。

There is, second, the extension of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, a truly challenging downtown project and an example of how an unmistably modern architecture may well be implemented into a historic context and be tailormade for a very narrow site to upscale the entire neighborhood.

第二个是汉堡商会的扩建。这是一个真正具有挑战性的典型市中心项目,说明如何将一个现代建筑很好地应用到历史背景中,并为一个非常狭窄的场地量身定制,以提升整个街区的档次。

There is, third, the Wuzhen Medical Park, a rehabilitation clinic, mainly for orthopedical and neurological cases built around a lush central parkscape. The design goal was to scale down a rather large and complex functional program as a clustered, typological family and with characteristic materialisation. In the end, we gave the complex a strong identity as a “healing architecture“, and well contrasting with a lush inner landscape reflecting the chinese garden.

第三个项目乌镇国际康复医院主要是为骨科和神经科病例而建,周围有一片郁郁葱葱的中央园林景观。设计的目标是将一个庞大复杂功能的项目分解成形态统一的聚落,同时运用具有地方特色的材料来实现。最后,我们赋予这个建筑群一个“康复建筑”的重要身份,并与反映中国园林的内部景观形成鲜明对比。

Architect´s work is also about ideas which wait for their time to become real. That is why I mention -last but not least- the design proposal I had  been involved, for a major bank HQ in Beijing. Though 1st prize winning, it did not find it´s way into realisation. However, for me it remains a strong example of how a down-to-earth HQ program may create a unique spatial experience which contributes to the high-quality, sustainable work environment of the future.

建筑师的工作也是等待将想法变为现实的过程。我参与过的北京一家大型银行总部的设计方案,虽然获得了第一名,但它并没有找到实现的途径。然而对我来说,它仍然是一个很好的例子,说明了一个务实的总部项目如何创造一种独特的空间体验,从而为未来的高质量、可持续的工作环境做出贡献。

Key research and design fields

Throughout my career, I have enjoyed the previlege of being involved in a wide range of tasks. Nonetheless, there are three fields which, for me, gradually became focusses of research and design. This is on the one hand the field of architecture for healthcare, including hospitals, research and laboratory buildings. Furthermore, the large topic of Urban Renewal and Upscaling is to be mentioned.

在我的职业生涯中,我一直享受着参与各种各样的工作的乐趣。而有三个领域逐渐成为我研究和设计的焦点。一方面是医疗建筑领域,包括医院、研究和实验室建筑。另一方面是城市更新和升级这一大主题。

As a third field, I would mention the designing of high-quality Headquarter buildings, public and also cultural buildings and, on a larger scale, the development of high-quality office parks.Sustainability is definetily a key issue for all the fields I describe, yet with a holistic connotation, meaning the energetic performance of a building as well as its durability functionwise and in its appearance.

第三个领域是高品质企业总部建筑、公共建筑和文化建筑的设计,以及更大规模的高级办公园区。可持续性对于我所描述的以上所有领域来说,无疑是一个关键问题,同时,还需要有整体的内涵,建筑的活力表现,以及它的耐久性,功能和外观。

设计哲学
Design philosophy

To my understanding, designing architecture is neither a matter of the architect`s self-realisation nor is it just another service to order. We are planning, or should be planning, with a cultural awareness and consider we are creating things to last longer than the ups and downs of fashion and trends. This also means a design should be robust in the sense that it can adapt future changes in usage and program which are unforeseeable today. Therefore, strong, sustainable design should first be derived from clear and thorough analysis of the task and all parameters, including the context, the climate. The identity, some would say: the beauty of a building should arise from this analytic process, not from shape for shape`s sake. In the end, every detail should reflect and express the overall concept.

对我而言,建筑设计既不是建筑师自我实现的问题,也不只是另一种订购服务。我们应该带着文化意识,认为我们创造的东西比时尚和潮流的变化更持久。这也意味着一个设计应该是耐久有活力的,因为它可以适应未来在使用和项目性质方面的变化,而这些变化在今天是不可预见的。因此,强有力的、可持续的设计首先应该来源于对任务和所有参数的清晰透彻的分析,包括环境、气候等。就像有人说的“同一性”,一座建筑的美应该来自于分析过程,而不是为了外在造型。同时,每一个细节都要体现和表达整体理念。

教育理念
Educational Philosophy


It is often mentioned that teaching at the University provides us architects with a higher degree of liberty. No doubt this is true. However, the most fascinating innovation take place under the complex conditions of reality. Therefore, I find it more fruitful to help students become competent and culturally aware contestants in this very field of the real. Students learn alot from one another and by personal research. Yet, to activate this potential, teachers should commit themselves personally to each student and carefully chose suitable assignments.

大学教学为建筑师提供了更高的自由度。然而,最引人入胜的创新发生在复杂的现实条件下。因此,我发现帮助学生在现实领域成为有能力和文化意识的选手更有成效。为了激发这种潜能,在学生们通过个人研究互相学习同时,教师应该亲自对每个学生作出指导并仔细选择合适的作业。


10.Acedemy for Architectural Culture, Hamburg, Germany

During my last course at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, School of Architecture, we e.g. split up 2nd year students in five different groups of materias -concrete, brick, timber, steel, glass- and had them design on identical site and with identical program. Results became remarkable through the circumstance that students needed to carefully study and address the main characteristics of their given material and then design accordingly. Plus they experienced the variety of solutions, seeing what happened to the very same task when expressed with a different material.

我最近在北京时装学院建筑学院指导的一门课上,把二年级学生分成了五组,运用不同的材料——混凝土、砖块、木材、钢材、玻璃——让他们在相同的场地上设计相同的项目。学生们通过仔细研究并找出所给定材料的主要特点,然后进行相应的设计,成果是显著的。他们也体验到了各种解决方案,看到了用不同材料在表达同一个任务时发生了什么。

关于UIC
Plans for UIC

We intend to further grow and, parallely, build up a new cluster within the company, which we call UIC – United International Consultants. Not only will we set up a strong team within WSP to address high-end public and also private clients, but we also intend to build a network of international experts in their fileld. Future high-end assignments, be they singular buildings or entire masterplans, require outstanding teams of experts orchestrated by the architects.Apart from that, I will perform as Design Principal for all WSP activity, actively participating in the daily internal development and refinements of our designs, and showing face to the clients in meetings and presentations.

我们在公司建立一个新的组织——WSPUIC联合国际咨询。在WSP内部建立一个强大的团队来解决高净值客户的问题,同时建立一个国际专家网络。未来的高端项目,无论是单体建筑还是总体规划,都需要由建筑师精心策划的优秀专家团队。除此之外,我还将担任维思平活动的设计负责人,积极参与我们设计的日常内部开发和完善,并在会议和演示中与客户面对面。

As UIC, we will be devoted to the future of planning and building by holistically studying the specific conditions of each task, and relating those key factors to international best practices. UIC’s outlook goes to our client’s needs for high-performing buildings. Our mission is to meet these expectations with a strong and interdisciplinary team, striving for a new definition of sustainabilit, combining the conceptual and the pragmatic in tailormade solutions.

Not least gainst this backdrop, me and the team started to develop a specific WSP quality management tool for HQ designing. Furthermore, I will also contribute to the advanced, continuing education of our staff through lectures, workshops and field trips. Equally, I will keep up a strong liaison with the academic field. With all different aspects mentioned, we see UIC as a future-orientated platform to meet high-end challenges of designing in 21st Century China.

As a general approach, I much subscribe to what some experts already described as a strategy “from Passive House to Active House“. Another major challenge, from my point of view, will be to improve the quality of architectural production at large, from masterplans down to the quality of singular buildings, together with improving the quallity of urban space. This path leads away from celebrating iconic solitaire architecture but instead regarding the full latitude of everyday building activity. To be mentioned is also the increasing importance of urban renewal, meaning the activating and integration of existing structures. Also here, WSP UIC is keen to prove their competences.

作为一种普遍的方法,我非常赞同一些专家已经描述的“从被动房到主动房”的策略。在我看来,另一个主要挑战将是提高总体建筑质量,从总体规划到单一建筑的质量,同时提高城市空间的质量。这条路远离庆祝标志性的纸牌建筑,而是关于日常建筑活动的全纬度。值得一提的是,城市更新的重要性与日俱增,这意味着激活和整合现有结构。同样在这里,WSP UIC渴望证明他们的能力。
