Justice at Last正义终将到来

My story of 2016 came as the year drew to a close. It featured Zhang Huanzhi, a Hebei province native who spent more than 20 years attempting to clear her dead son's name, and finally succeeded.

In 1994, Zhang's son, 21-year-old Nie Shubin, was executed after being convicted of rape and murder. Shortly after the execution, Zhang, who refused to believe that her son committed the crimes, appealed the verdict in the hope of quashing the conviction.

The case returned to the public eye in 2005, when a man named Wang Shujin was arrested for an alleged rape and murder. While in detention, Wang confessed that he had committed the crimes that cost Nie his life. Following the confession, the judicial bodies in Hebei reopened the investigation into Nie's case.

In December 2014, the Supreme People's Court, China's top judicial body, ordered the Shandong Provincial High People's Court to reinvestigate the case. In June, the top body ordered a junior chamber, the Second Circuit Court in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, to retry the case. On Dec 2, Nie's conviction was quashed and his name was cleared, 21 years after his execution.

Zhang wept as the judgment was announced, and shouted: "I've been hoping for this day for a long time, but it won't bring my son back."

Watching the weeping mother in the public gallery of the court, I was unable to hold back my tears. The appeal and retrial process were devastating for the 72-year-old because appealing a verdict in China's courts is a time-consuming and often heartbreaking process. When Zhang explained in a trembling voice that her more than two decades of effort had been worth it, I felt the deep love a mother has for her child, and marveled at her persistence.

It was not the first time I had witnessed a ruling being announced, but it was the first time I had felt so nervous about the outcome.

I have covered China's legal scene for more than six years, and I always tell myself not to be easily touched or affected by interviewees, because one needs a clear, calm head to write their stories. But when the ruling was read out, I forgot my golden rule because Nie's pardon was a moment of validation for Zhang. Having met and interviewed the family several times, I was pleased and relieved that justice had been done, even so late in the day.

I will remember that moment forever. It will inform my work as I follow China's attempts to build a truly strong legal system that will allow wrongful convictions to be overturned with more speed.

The Bravest Boy

In August, I was reunited with Guo Bin, one of the bravest people I have ever met.

In 2013, when Guo was 6, his eyes were gouged out by an aunt. The motive for the attack has never been established because the woman was found dead shortly afterward.

The horrific incident attracted global attention and condemnation, and people across the world responded by sending donations to the hospital where the boy was being treated to help pay his medical bills.

At the time, Chinese social media was abuzz, but one comment remained in my mind: "Sooner or later the boy will be forgotten, but he will live in darkness for his whole life." To some extent, that prediction was correct-Guo, known affectionately as Binbin-has been all but forgotten, but that doesn't mean he lives in darkness.

The first time I met Binbin was at the hospital in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province, where he was trying to come to terms with what had happened to him.

He kept touching the toys that people had sent him, trying to figure out what they were. Suddenly, he asked: "Why is it dark all the time?" It was a heartbreaking moment.

A short time later, my work took me to Kenya for almost two years, and although I kept in touch with Binbin's mother, I didn't know much about the boy's condition.

When we met again, he was in Beijing to participate in the national ocarina tournament. I hadn't seen him for almost three years, and I was astonished by how much he had changed and grown.

"I want to be a musician," he told me, enthusiastically. He smiled all the time, especially when his team was awarded the gold medal.

His teacher told me that the 9-year-old also plays bass guitar in a band, and music is the dominant force in his life.

So, despite the prediction, it seems that Guo will not live in darkness forever.

Rather, he has found a guiding light through the power of music.

An Indomitable Will to Live

In July, I met Gao Zhihong, a remarkable woman who, despite great personal suffering, considers herself to be a fortunate person who just happens to have had some unfortunate experiences.

"I was paralyzed, but I survived. It claimed so many lives," the 65-year-old said.

"It" was the 1976 Tangshan earthquake - a magnitude 7.8 tremblor that left more than 240,000 people dead and injured an estimated 164,000.

Although they were both paralyzed, Gao and her husband, Yang Yufang, survived, unlike many relatives and friends.

It has been a busy year for Gao and Yang. On July 28, the 40th anniversary of the quake, they met with President Xi Jinping. The invitation was extended after Yang sent Xi two books he had written - a collection of his poetry and a novel - based on his post-quake experiences.

The couple also accepted invitations from local groups and the media to encourage people in difficulty by explaining how they rebuilt their lives.

"We were invited to several universities in early September, the start of the semester, to read poems, share our experiences with students from low-income families and encourage them to see the good things in life," Gao said.

In late November, the couple appeared on a TV program called “The Happy Family” in the eastern province of Jiangsu and shared their experiences with the audience.

"Unfortunately, we don't have cable TV, so we were unable to see the show when it was broadcast," Gao said.

"We have pretty fulfilling lives," she said, adding that their only wish is to move into a larger apartment. Gao and Yang live in a 15-square-meter room with basic furniture: a queen-sized bed, a wardrobe, two wheelchairs and two motorcycles adapted for disabled people. The tiny space is packed.

I met the couple in July while researching a story about the 40th anniversary of the quake. Before I met them, I never imagined that people could be so serene after their lives had been turned upside down in a single night.

I have always believed that some traumas cannot be overcome, irrespective of space and time, but meeting Gao and Yang energized me and gave me a more positive outlook. Now, I realize that the things I used to complain about in my life are just minor irritants.

After all, how can I be ungrateful for what I have when some people have experienced such horror and still have nothing?

Sports and Sunshine

As the year comes to an end, my trip to Brazil in August to cover the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro stands out as my highlight, thanks to the challenges, inspiration and great sense of accomplishment that enriched 25 grueling, yet exciting, days on the other side of the world.

Covering the Summer Olympics, the biggest sporting extravaganza on the planet, is a dream come true for every sports reporter, and I am blessed to have realized it twice, in Rio and in London in 2012.

The challenge was tougher this time, though, because as the only China Daily journalist on the frontline I had to cover the multi-sport gala for both the print and digital outlets.

Thanks to my pre-Games news planning and full editorial support back home, I survived and managed to do my job - sending back about 80 stories, plus interviews and videos - despite sleeping just four hours a night, and in the face of poorly labeled facilities at Rio's remote Olympic complex, real-life security risks and heavy traffic.

Still, the opportunity to witness the best athletes in the world - namely Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps - push themselves to the limits of physical endurance, and being inspired by inner strength beyond the sporting action was a great reward that is only possible once every four years.

Thank you, Rio, for making my year!

Wounds of War

The biggest moment for me this year was when I came face to face with the wounds of war, open and festering, in Quzhou, a city in Zhejiang province ravaged by war that has now become a prosperous place.

However, even after more than seven decades the wounds left by Japan's occupation of China have yet to heal.

I had gone there to meet a group of "rotten-leggers"-victims of Unit 731, the Japanese army's notorious germ-warfare division during World War II. These men, mostly in their 80s and 90s, have endured pain for virtually their whole lives, totally unaware that the cause of their problems was anthrax bacteria spread by the Japanese army, which affected many parts of Zhejiang and neighboring Jiangxi province in 1942.

The people unaffected by the attack were also unaware of the cause: many just attributed the oozing ulcers on the men's feet and legs to poor hygiene, or even just bad luck. The stigma was like having salt rubbed into their wounds.

Things began to change this year when a public donation platform was launched by Wang Xuan, a social activist-cum-germ-warfare historian who has been central to efforts to gain justice for victims of Japanese war crimes. Wang teamed up with doctors from a local hospital, and so far, more than 50 people have undergone treatment to ease their suffering.

Of course, many other victims didn't live long enough to find that sense of relief.

Zhejiang is one of China's most affluent provinces, so many questions remain. For example, how could it be that these men, who survived the bloodiest invasion in the country's modern history, were left without care for so many decades? Furthermore, why has no serious research, including the recording of oral history, been conducted to examine the link between the disease and the bacteria attack?

The survivors should not still be waiting for the answers to those questions.

An Unforgettable Experience

In nearly 12 years as a journalist, I have conducted thousands of interviews and witnessed many big events. A month ago, when I was assigned to report on narcotics control in Yunnan province, a region that borders Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, I never imagined that it would be my most unforgettable experience for many years.

When I arrived in the tropical mountainous area after an excruciating trip and attended a field inspection with narcotics officers from Mukang station in Mangshi, a gateway targeted by drug traffickers, I realized that the young officers, mostly in their 20s, face deadly dangers every day.

Even when wearing full body armor, they are still exposed to unpredictable threats. Most of them were fresh out of high school when they were recruited as armed police officers.

None of them had any idea of the life-and-death situations they would face in their work. Some officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. For others, the job of inspecting suspect vehicles requires selfless devotion and professional skill. Moreover, much of the work is tedious, unglamorous and unheralded.

The story of a 20-year-old female narcotics officer struck me most. A year ago, she was a typical middle school student-an aspiring fashionista, who enjoyed Korean movies and hanging out with friends. Now, she has learned to do everything from vehicle inspections to apprehending suspects. She has even overcome her aversion to what she saw as the worst part of her job as a new recruit-performing cavity searches to extract packets of drugs swallowed by "mules".

During our interview, she told me that after her first extraction, she couldn't eat for two days and vomited several times, even days later. She even thought about quitting the job. However, the thousands of cases at the station and the support of her colleagues convinced her to continue.

Now, when I see media reports that focus on economic "miracles", business tycoons, glamorous celebrities or just anecdotes, I think of this group of public servants who are worthy of greater attention and deserve more respect from society.
