In case you missed it | Mid-Autumn festivities at Wellington
Yesterday was Mid-Autumn Festival. Steeped in an ancient Chinese legend, this holiday is a time for families and friends to reunite, gaze at the luminous beauty of the autumn moon and snack on lots of intricately patterned pastries packed with all kinds of surprises. Last Friday, our Chinese studies department celebrated with festive decor and lots of engaging activities for our pupils.
A large inflatable moon stood at the entrance of the reception area. Nearby was an equally large white jade rabbit, which, according to legend was the steadfast companion to the moon goddess Chang E. Also on display was a massive mooncake to be shared among pupils and teachers.
The first Chinese festival on our academic calendar, Mid-Autumn Festival always brings with it a host of opportunities for our pupils to explore Chinese history, culture and customs while, of course, having a lot of fun in the process.
This year, for instance, our year 1 pupils learned how to play a traditional Chinese chop game that featured Chinese characters related to the festival. Meanwhile, our year 2 pupils harnessed their creative talents as they made jade rabbits out of paper bags.
Out on the sports field, our pupils in years 3, 4 and 5 put their coordination and teamwork skills to the test with a game called 'Keep up the Moon' that saw participants pulling on ropes to lift a Chinese drum that kept a ball — symbolising the moon — from falling to the ground.
In case you missed any of our on-campus festivities, we hope you enjoyed some of our pictures and video from the day's events and had a happy Mid-Autumn Festival full of food and fun with family!
