Reflections on the first Model UN conference held at Wellington
Wellington Model United Nations 2023
Theme: Conflict: Healing the scars of the past
In late March, Wellington Shanghai hosted its inaugural Model United Nations conference with external delegate invitees. After two years of two years of disruption and postponements, this was a long-awaited event. Over 92 pupils from six different schools participated, 32 of which were our very own Wellingtonians.
Indeed, Model United Nations is such a worthwhile activity for our pupils because. It is a hands-on way to learn about culture, history, politics, geography, economics, demographics, diplomacy and so much more. Moreover, it presents so many opportunities for them to put our Wellington Values into practice. They learn Responsibility and Integrity through teamwork, Courage through public speaking, Respect through civil debate and Kindness through making likeminded friends from other schools.
Model UN Secretary General Beatrice (year 11) sums the experience up perfectly:
Moreover, I was lucky enough to chair the Security Council with my good friend Andrea, and we were both extremely impressed with the level of preparation that each delegate had put in. They had to articulate, persuasive, and diplomatic in their speeches, as well as interesting “POIs” (Points of Information). It was evident that each delegate put in a great deal of effort.
My experience as the General Secretary was very rewarding. It was inspiring to see so many students collaborate to discuss some of the world's most pressing issues. The skills gained through participating in conferences like these can have a lasting impact on these students and help them become responsible global citizens who are committed to making a positive difference in the world.”
All our pupils deserve huge credit for their detailed research, courage to speak in front of others, and willingness to collaborate effectively with other delegates for this event. Huge thanks must also go to Wellington Shanghai Master Brendon Fulton for his support and Wellington College China Founder and Chairman Joy Qiao, for being the event’s keynote speaker. Model United Nations at Wellington continues to go from strength to strength with over 80 pupils attending the weekly CCA sessions and, with travel restrictions, we have a host of domestic and international trips planned for the next academic year.
