The Humans and Rivers Declaration
The great rivers of the world have brought to life the human societies and glorious cultures that distinguish us from animals. As far back as the dawn of civilization, a mother river will always accompany the earliest human structures of dirt and stone.
The Euphrates raised the ancient Babylonians; the Ganges witnessed the rise and prosperity of India; the Egyptians built miraculous wonders along their sacred Nile; the Yellow River gave birth to the longest continuous civilization, China. For thousands of years, we as humans have had an unbreakable tie with these sacred rivers. Numerous poets and writers devoted their romantic spirits to praising the Mississippi, the Rhine, the Mekong, the Danube, and all of the othergreat rivers. The bond between these rivers and ourselves is so steady and tight that it has become deeply embedded in our very souls.
Springwater, melted snow, raindrops; all of these small water bodies eventually merge into rivers. Saturated with the aroma of nature, these rivers flow forward, freely yet firmly. Their final destination is the ocean, where all rivers of all lands finally unite as one. Carrying their timeless tides, the sacred rivers of the Amazon, the Qiantang, and the Ganges pledge their alliance with the sea. Rivers are essential parts of the hydrosphere, and their water cycles are an entity that transcends nationalities, transcends borders, transcends any lines put in place by mankind. Rivers know no boundaries, because the water that flowed through the Ganges today may appear in the Rhine tomorrow, and the waters of the Yellow River and the Euphrates will come together as one in the ocean. Humans and rivers are inseparable: even the smallest drop of sweat will reach the clouds and then return once again; the wastewater poured into a river will one day return in a new form to the polluter himself.
More than 70% of the human body is composed of water, and considering that the majority of our drinking water originates in our rivers, it is impossible for us to segregate ourselves from them. All of the pollution we force upon our rivers, is but only wounds to our civilizations and ourselves. To protect rivers, is to protect the common interests of the entire human race.
If rivers had a spirit, we would bind our fate to it. May rivers and humans watch over each other, preventing any mutual destruction and bringing forth mutual coherence and may we as humans flourish harmoniously with the rivers of our world, as our ancestors did.
