Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen Elevates Their Dinner Buffet

2017-07-20 shenzhenparty

Living here in Shenzhen China, I have noticed that the city is quickly growing in its diversity and knowledge of international foods. This is evident in the amount of restaurants and concepts that are springing up around the city. In the past, it was a lot harder (even within the last few years) for expats to find food from their home countries in China or to find restaurants that catered to their culture and traditions. Nowadays, as the city of Shenzhen begins to grow its now easier than ever to not only find traditional and authentic cuisine from around the world but also fusion concepts have arisen combining traditional Chinese favorites with dishes from around the world – thus catering to the growing diversity in the city as well as allowing others to experience food from new sources. Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen has done just this in their elevation of their buffet restaurant – Café Zen.

Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen, as of April 28th, upgraded its buffet with 13 stations. Guests who love the traditional items of the buffet inside Café Zen can now also enjoy an international selection of dishes including fish maw soup, uni, black golden abalone and sea cucumber (weekend dinner only). When I first entered into Café Zen, I loved the concept immediately. The buffet is broken up into different stations – each with its own theme and some representing a specific country.

I first went to the salad bar which is a beautiful array of fresh veggies, fruits, seafood and included cupped premade salads that you could seal in your favorite dressing and shake the sealed salad cup until you have a good mix. This was perfect for me since I am usually indecisive when in front of such a large station. Apart from six kinds of vegetables and 15 condiments, the Salad Station will also present popular seasonal fruits and vegetables.

While in the salad area, I noticed the cold cut station featuring a Jamon Iberico already presliced and four types of cheese including my favorites: Parmesan and Swiss. In order to let guests enjoy different kinds of Western and Chinese cuisines, Café Zen will also present one delicate Huaiyang cuisine daily, including Bean Dough with Black Fungus and Peanut, Jellyfish Marinated in Vinegar and Pepper and Braised Vegetarian Duck.

Moving from China to Japan, I always miss a good sushi and luckily the buffet has a separate station with freshly made hand rolls, nigiri and even fresh sushi bowls all prepared. It’s good to note that every week, Café Zen will buy 30- to 35-kilos of tuna fished from the Indian Ocean. Also on the weekends, the chef will present Spicy Toro and Ikura Chirashi Sushi and Spicy Tuna Sushi on site. Meanwhile, Salmon Tataki Sushi and Uni on Ice will be offered during dinner. This is next to a cold seafood station that has many select seafood items including king crab over ice. I feel this is a local favorite.

The hot station was one of my favorite areas and combined Chinese, Indian and Western cuisine. A special Indian chef was brought in to provide an array of Indian dishes including mutton curry. The Western station had a mix of items including pizza and beef ribs. I feel the mix was balanced and provided a good choice for multiple cultures. Next to this station was the barbecue station where you can choose from many kinds of meats and fish. The Barbecue Station will now prepare Oysters and Lamb T-bone from Australia. Argentine Red Prawn will also be prepared during dinner on weekends. My personal favorite was the salmon.

The other stations brought in traditional Chinese dishes. There is a steamed bread station with many variations of Chinese buns. There is also a steamed seafood station where guests can choose live and raw seafood to be steamed fresh on the spot. The chef will also serve Grouper weighing 15 to 20 kilograms on weekends.

There is also a Chinese barbecue station with locally prepared Peking Duck Roll as well as pork and chicken. Furthermore, a soup station and noodle station are also available with traditional Chinese ingredients.

If you have children or a sweet tooth, you will love the dessert area. It is filled with fresh made Japanese cheesecake and South East Asian-style desserts, such as Kuih Lapis and Kuih Dadar. There is also a yogurt bar area and a chocolate fountain. On weekends, the chef will make Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream on site, which is expected to bring guests a lot of fun. Apart from the upgraded desserts, guests can also enjoy the classic desserts, such as Napoleon, Tiramisu, Durian Explosive Slurry Cake and Chocolate Hazelnut Cake.

Altogether, Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen is doing a great job with the elevation of their buffet inside Café Zen. There is a stronger diversity of cuisines that will invite a more international crowd as well as give the local people an experience with trying new flavors.
