The Threepenny Opera

The Threepenny Opera

Written by German playwright Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, The Threepenny Opera is adapted from the 18th century English opera The Beggar’s Opera. The pair worked together constantly and their jazz-influenced singspiel took the German theatre - dominated by traditional classical opera - by storm. A portrayal of class struggle and disillusionment of capitalism after the First World War, the work became a big hit after its opening in Berlin in 1928 and has influenced countless Broadway musicals thereafter.

The Threepenny Opera tells the story of the notorious thief Macheath, who marries Polly, daughter of a leader of a ring of London beggars. Furious with the marriage and eyeing on the bounty, Mr Peachum plots to report Macheath to Brown, Chief of Police. Though Brown and Macheath are old army comrades, Macheath is still captured twice due to the betrayal of a prostitute and the threat from Mr Peachum. He is sent to the guillotine, but what happens before the execution?

A trio of renowned alumni Andrew Chan (director), Frankie Ho (music director) and Kenneth Cheung (lyricist) is set to lead audience into the dialectical world of Brecht through their interpretation of The Threepenny Opera.
