SWIS Youth Event: Inspiring Global Minds

It is always a task to come up with a new idea and to execute it. The conception of SWIS youth event is one such idea that originally came from the idea of TEDx events across the globe. Shen Wai International School has been setting milestones in the realm of internationalism. SWIS Youth event is a platform to further our mission “Inspiring global minds”. Through this event we aim is to reach out to people in the society who through their initiatives and ideas carved a niche for themselves. These are the people from various walks of life. For our first year event, we roped in people like a philanthropist, an orthopedist, an educator, a football coach, an entrepreneur and a globetrotter.

These are all different people with their own uniqueness that aligns with our first year’s theme ”Uniqueness within the common”. Our speakers came out of their comfort zone, worked on an idea and became role models who are capable of inspiring the youth.

Speakers at SWIS Youth Event 2018 have the liberty to speak in Chinese or English, as our objective is to get the idea across and not only the language. The speaker body includes people from China and abroad that makes the event a fairly good blend of international platform. Another highlight of this event is that the teams that are working with me are our high-school students and the teachers in design, music and marketing department.

SWIS Youth活动始于这样一个想法：我们需要一个足够好的平台以启发SWIS学生们对世界的思考。

受到在世界范围内享有盛名的TEDx演讲活动的影响，SWIS 的中学部学生决定举办第一届SWIS Youth活动。今年的主题是“Uniqueness within Common”（平凡中闪耀的个性之光）。我们邀请了来自深圳在不同行业有所建树的嘉宾前来演讲。他们用独特的想法和不断的努力，在各个领域中开辟出一条属于自己的道路。我们希望通过这些启发性的演讲，让同学们看到——许多看似平凡的岗位上，都有着不同寻常的人在闪耀着他们的个性之光。

Spearker Introduction

演讲嘉宾简介：

Mr. Hong Zhen

Hong Zhen is the founder of “One Energy” (壹能量), a charity helping children’s education in China. He participated in organizing two initialevents: 2017 National Firefighting Charity Association (2017全国消防公益巡演联合发起人) and Caring about left-behind children event (关注留守儿童计划“爱·不留守”联合发起人). He is also one of the analysts for “colorful characteristics” (categorizing human characteristics into colors). As a whole, he is a charitable person involved in all kinds of service.

We chose Mr. Zhen as he is willing to share his journey to starting multiple charity events for children and what keeps him motivated. He experienced challenges in organizing, initiating and planning his activities and teaching trips. He will be willing to share how he manages to be a leader and encourage others to participate actively as well as making  events successful.

Mr. Gene Kemble

Mr. Kemble was born in Paramaribo, Suriname. He went to North Carolina Wesleyan College, located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. After college, he studied at the Johan Cruyff Sports Institute in Amsterdam for a year, graduating with a masters’ in International Sports Management. After finishing his studies, he came to China and has been working at FC SES in Shenzhen for over 5 years now. Gene Kemble started at FC SES back in September 2012.

Gene’s objective is to spread an understanding and love for football amongst young Chinese students with emphasis on exercising through sports. He wants to promote healthy life style.

Dr. Zhang 

After spending 11 years in medical school, Dr. Zhang went to Peking University Hospital Shenzhen and worked as a doctor at the Department of Orthopedics. He led a team of doctors and opened a new department in the hospital known as ‘rehabilitation department’. He worked hard to develop the team. He spent countless nights on working out how to develop the department, and really became a successful head of the rehabilitation department. 

Melinda Alford

Melinda is acurriculum developer and educational leader for international schools. She has served in Asia for 14 years and focuses on technological innovation. Melinda is a cancer survivor and has come a long way from fighting cancer and now leading a purposeful life. She would like to share her experience of life that she had at the age of 16 which changed her complete perspective towards life. ‘I was homeless at 16 and why that was a good thing. The power of being 'thankful' is what she is going to share her thoughts on.

Mr. Jiang Jun Xu 

Mr. Xu is a professional traveller and Frisbee athlete. He has cycled through three continents and sixteen countries. He also travelled through Lake Baikal area, nearly 700km no-human zone, in 2017. He was the first in China to do so. He also made a movie about his travels through Lake Baikal area, which earned prize on “Best risk-taking movie”. He aims to travel 40075 km using human power (no technology like planes or cars). When he is not traveling, he plays Frisbee. He has won Frisbee competitions ten times in China, Russia and other countries.

Mr. Xu will be sharing his experiences of his journeys with the youth at our event. During those journeys, he experienced many challenges and saw many surprises as well as experienced meaningful moments. He is not only an athlete but also a quiet observer of the world, giving him a different view of the world. 

Mr. Michael Mersol Barg

Mr. Barg is an economist who owns a consultancy company advising foreign companies who would like to open a new business in China. Mr. Barg is a generalist, besides his economics background, he is fond of literature and likes writing. He works at an institution part-time to help students improve their literacy level. He will be sharing his experience of helping students in China to improve their literacy level and achieving bigger goals in life.
