Inaugural Youth Fashion Tech Show

shenzhenparty 2019-04-20

17 May 2018, Shenzhen - Design Society is delighted to present the inaugural Youth Fashion Tech Show initiated by MakeFashion EDU on the 27th May at Sea World Culture and Arts Center, in collaboration with Nanshan Education Innovation Network.

At the core of this event is the mission to foster community by creating a platform for young designers to express themselves and share their stories. Young designers, aged 7 to 17, forming 20 teams, will be showcasing their projects on and off the runway. As a prelude to the runway show, a virtual DJ will play a set, followed by a Tagtool freestyle performance: freestyle dance being tagged by a freestyle graffiti artist using light as their medium.

MakeFashion EDU started with the founding concept of community at its core. SteamHead's Carrie Leung and MakeFashion's Shannon Hoover identified members of the primary and secondary education track as underserved in the maker and fashion design scenes, where both age and finances act as barriers to entry. Coming together, SteamHead and MakeFashion have spearheaded efforts as MakeFashion EDU in Shenzhen to create a platform for kids to make and design in a meaningful forum; this has been brought together through a combination creative use of the resources at hand and the time and love of the surrounding community.

The inaugural Youth Fashion Tech Show is strongly supported by local community partners and have welcomed local schools and maker studios to participate, including Dong Wan School, Shenzhen American International School, Shen Wai International School, Shen Wai Longgang International School, Yucai #4, Elecfreaks, MG Space, SteamHead, Moralture and International School of Nanshan Shenzhen.

In the call for designers, MakeFashion EDU required submissions to include a sketch of their designs, a list of tech to be incorporated, and an explanation of concepts and inspiration for their projects. By making their own tech fashion, students develop design thinking, elevate their capabilities of applying technology, art and mathematics. MakeFashion EDU provides them a great opportunity to share their creativity with a wider audience.

Youth Fashion Tech Show hosted by Design Society is "a major growing and maturing step" and a reaching out to invite others in, according to Ms. Leung. Emphasis must also be placed on that all of this growing and maturing has happened in the build-up to the event: through an initial small-scale fashion walk to garner interest; workshops to disseminate expertise, resources, and time; and, the community coming together on a whole, inspiring one another, providing support, and supplying the physical and virtual platorms for the young designers to stand on.

MakeFashion EDU's goal is to foster community by helping people build their passions and express themselves, where, ultimately, fashion is a way for people to see people as the want to be seen. During an early workshop, young designers were asking Shannon whether their idea was good or not; affirmating their work, he responded: "it's your story, it's about you."

As a new cultural hub focusing on design, Design Society takes design education at its core, promotes co-design with the society, and endeavors to present the most innovative and creative design education programmes to the public. It aims to become the leading, professional and international platform of design education. Since the opening in December 2017, Design Society has already welcomed more than half a million visitors, and organized more than 100 diversified public activities, including talks, workshops, panel discussions, performances and concerts. By co-hosting the MakeFashion EDU as innovative educational project which combines fashion with maker tech, Design Society explores new possibilities of design education and will present more exciting educational programmes in the future.

You are more than welcome to join us at the runway on 27 May to witness the tech fashion show and freestyle performance, and to meet the young designers and makers. We look forward to seeing you dress up in your own fashion tech style!
