Event Topic: Make a Zongzi for the great poet Quyuan

The 18th of Jun 2018 (5th of May of the Chinese lunar calendar) is a very important festival – 端午节Duānwǔjié (Dragon boat festival) for Chinese people, you may think that it’s a festival for the dragon boat because of the English name,  but it’s actually also for one of the greatest poets in China’s history, and his name is 屈原 (Qūyuán).

And the most important things to do in the festival are making 粽子 (Zòngzi) and having the 龙舟赛 (lóngzhōusài) dragon boat race. But why?

It was an old tradition to hold the dragon boat race on this day to worship their ancestors in ancient China, and the leader of Chuguo in the Warring States period decided to make this day a commemoration of Quyuan after he committed suicide by drowning himself with a rock in the Miluo river.

The people were sooo sad for the fact that Quyuan committed suicide, and they make Zongzi and throw them into the river to feed the river dragon so it would not eat Quyuan’s body.

So, on the 16th of Jun, Hanlin is going to teach you how make the special and delicious Zongzi.
