at PMQ during Hong Kong Art Month

A Comprehensive Survey Solo Exhibition by KAWS, exploring one decade of artistic practice, KAWS: ALONG THE WAY brings the most iconic works, including a rich array of design figures, paintings, sculptures, and pieces never before exhibited in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Contemporary Art (HOCA) Foundation is proud to present KAWS: ALONG THE WAY curated by Germano Celant, a major survey spanning one decade of the artist’s studio practice. Featuring works from 2008 to the present, this comprehensive solo exhibition will also include pieces that have never been presented in Hong Kong before. Curated thematically and chronologically, the survey will include some of the artist’s most iconic characters such as the CHUM and COMPANION series as well as his more recent cycle of works titled YOU. The exhibition will take place at PMQ, 35 Aberdeen Street, Central, Hong Kong, from now to 14 April 2019.

As an in-depth survey of KAWS’s oeuvre, KAWS: ALONG THE WAY will display a selection of 37 works, ranging from larger-than-life outdoor sculptures, to most recent paintings as well as early pieces. The exhibition will take over both indoor and outdoor spaces of PMQ, with a sizeable, 5.5-metre-tall sculpture: ALONG THE WAY (2015) greeting visitors in the courtyard. The towering pair of COMPANION figures, with their arms around each other in a gentle embrace, are expected to bring contemporary art and design closer to the public. The exhibition will also mark the global debut of this sculpture. With joyous characters as a part of a shared visual memory, offering a mixture of bold colours, personalised iconographies and a touch of humor, other exhibition highlights will include iconic pieces such as NEW MORNING (2012), an 8-feet-tall pink ACCOMPLICE sculpture and two pieces from the artist’s YOU series.

Claire Crozel, Director, HOCA Foundation, says, “HOCA Foundation was founded in 2014 with a view of bringing art to the city and its people, taking artworks outside of a traditional gallery context and presenting contemporary art exhibitions and events across the city. ALONG THE WAY – the first such comprehensive survey of KAWS in Hong Kong – gives us a wonderful opportunity to present this prolific artist in an in-depth and yet approachable manner. Merging diverse fields of artistic and creative production, KAWS is widely known for his signature cast of cartoon-inspired figures that enjoy a broad appeal. We are thrilled to be presenting these artworks and objects alongside pieces making their debut in the city during the Art Month of Hong Kong.”

KAWS says, “I am grateful to the HOCA Foundation for hosting this solo exhibition, where I can reflect on my practice from the past decade and inviting me back to Hong Kong. It is very exciting to see so many of my works gathered in one place and representing different phases and facets of my career. I have always wanted my art to connect with people – to have this opportunity to exhibit my works in the heart of Hong Kong’s bustling centre is great.”

To complement the works showcased in the exhibition, HOCA Foundation will run an Education Program with the partner schools of St James Settlement Charity, hosting a series of artistic workshops inspired by KAWS' body of work for children to discover the exhibition with an art-inspired approach.

KAWS: ALONG THE WAY is curated by renowned curator Germano Celant and supported by Title Sponsor HUBLOT, with additional support from Supporting Sponsor SANDRO and Education Program sponsor Clifford Chance. The installation and the graphic design of the exhibition is conceived by 2x4, a multi-disciplinary global design consultancy in New York City.
