Artist Statement:

"I Am Ron"

When I first started doing art at McDonald’s, I was in Hong Kong, living in the park. I’d come for my visa and ended up staying a month. McDonald’s was a good place to draw and use wifi and get hot water. I don’t eat the food.

I’d finished a long cycling journey through South East Asia. I didn’t carry much, only the basic supplies. And papers and pens for drawing. I didn’t have a computer or a cell phone; I stayed with people rather than in hotels. Monks helped me, usually, and I drew them. Police, too, were kind hosts. Often we couldn’t communicate much, but they’d offer me food, and I’d draw them. A man offered to build me a house. A woman gave me keys to her empty apartment in Bangkok.

In the Hong Kong McDonald’s I was drawing self-portraits on tray paper. I liked it there; I liked talking to the guests and showing them my drawings. I started to combine my travel drawing with McDonald’s. I started collecting tray paper. I wanted to print a travel zine on tray paper. To make paintings with tray paper. Could I become the McArtist?

In McDonald’s, I am Ron: I make art in McDonald's with tray paper. Li helps. You might find us there. You’ll say, "Dear McDonald’s", and I’ll draw your portrait on tray paper, and the moment will be McMeaningful. Things are not always how you think they might be, or should be, but beauty and truth are worth pursuing no matter where you are. I don’t recommend the food, but a lot of people like it. I like the lattes and the tray paper. I guess.
