Much more than just a music festival, Clockenflap is a truly immersive experience that offers festivalgoers the opportunity to have fun and express themselves in a variety of compelling ways, from exploring an awe-inspiring array of interactive experiences, jaw-dropping Instagrammable installations and gloriously offbeat family-friendly entertainment, to showing off their fabulous fashion finds, discovering the latest lifestyle trends and partying the weekend away with likeminded new friends.

As part of the announcement, Mike Hill, co-founder and CEO of Magnetic Asia Ltd., the organisers of Clockenflap, reiterated the festival’s mission to inspire and entertain people through music and arts, and emphasised the company’s determination to host the festival as planned despite the current challenging circumstances in Hong Kong.

“It has always been our aim to bring Hongkongers together in positive ways, and this mission has never been more relevant,” said Hill. “With the ongoing situation in the city, and with many other events choosing to cancel, we felt that it was particularly important that people have a fun and inspiring homegrown event to look forward to.”

Hill also stressed that the safety of attendees is always one of Clockenflap’s prime concerns. “Every year we face different challenges with regard to security and audience safety. These are always diligently planned for, and lead to the implementation of specific protocols each year. This year’s situation has been fully assessed according to strict international guidelines as well as liaison with all relevant local and international parties, to ensure we can bring Hong Kong another great weekend of music, arts and fun in a safe environment.”

Music: A Diverse Blend Of Top International, Regional & Local Favourites Across Six Stages

Clockenflap serves up a wide and varied selection of entertainment for people of all ages, but music is the festival’s heartbeat, and fans can look forward to a deeply diverse array of acts and genres from around the world. The festival’s six distinctive stages – HARBOURFLAP, ATUM, RED BULL STAGE, ROBOT, ACORN and SILENT DISCO – truly have something for everyone, with an eclectic lineup of established and cutting-edge live acts and DJs that includes 27 artists making their Hong Kong debuts, and 10 Clockenflap-exclusive sets.

Newly Announced Acts

Returning to Hong Kong for the first time since their unforgettable headline slot against the backdrop of a lunar eclipse at Clockenflap 2013, British indie-rockers BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB will draw from their flawless back catalogue as well as giving fans a taste of their forthcoming fifth album, Everything Else Has Gone Wrong.

Australian singer-songwriter NICK MURPHY (formerly known as CHET FAKER) makes his long-awaited Clockenflap debut. Since rising to fame with his viral 2011 cover of Blackstreet’s No Diggity, Murphy has demonstrated his song-writing talent across a clutch of EPs and two full-length albums, including this year’s acclaimed Run Fast Sleep Naked.

Also newly added to the bill are three equally brilliant but completely different UK indie acts: fresh from the release of their sixth studio album, Metronomy Forever, English indietronica icons METRONOMY play Hong Kong for the first time since 2012; making their Hong Kong debut, celebrated UK-based psychedelic pop purveyors GLASS ANIMALS; and returning to Hong Kong for the first time in almost a decade in support of their new album Inside the Rose, fêted British experimental rockers THESE NEW PURITANS.

They will be joined by Canadian rapper BBNO$, whose recent track Lalala has clocked up close to 300 million plays on Spotify; Hong Kong dream-pop act ROOM307; South Korean electronic trio IDIOTAPE; Jamaican reggae/dancehall artist SKARRA MUCCI performing with JADO, MOUSEFX & HEAVY HK; and eclectic London-based DJ BAZZA RANKS.

Arts Experiences: Awe-Inspiring Interactive Attractions For All The Family

Completely reimagined for 2019, the festival site is packed with Instagram-friendly installations and landmarks, weird and wonky wandering wonders, and a slew of surprises and thrilling new experiences at every turn.

Landmarks & Installations

Among the signature sights returning to the festival this year are the giant inflatable GARDEN that offers the perfect backdrop for silly selfies; URCHIN, a huge inflatable dome covered in glowing spikes that also serves as the cover for the Acorn stage; LOTUS TEMPLE, a six-metre high inflatable structure inspired by the lotus flower and Goa, India; and TENTACLES, the fantastical waymarker that has become a much-loved symbol of Clockenflap. They will be joined by TOTEM, a towering new 7.5-metre-high inflatable installation featuring some of Clockenflap 2019’s animated characters that welcomes people at the entrance and offers a perfect backdrop for festival photos.

Roving Arts

Also returning is the festival’s eye-popping lineup of roving arts attractions, which will this year include the debut of MIRABELLE THE SNAIL, a cute and curious character created by world-renowned Australian puppet theatre company Snuff Puppets, and WHO-DO CATERPILLARS, a surreal and scaled-up reimagining of the tiny wriggling creatures created by the winner of Clockenflap’s Arts Open Call, Sum-sum.

These new additions will be joined by three roving attractions back by popular demand: BALLOON CHAIN, a gigantic and interactive constantly changing sculpture made of helium-filled balloons that has been a fan-favourite at the Coachella and Burning Man festivals over the past decade; BIRDMEN, a trio of huge luminous bird-like creatures that wander inquisitively among the crowd to offer otherworldly photo opportunities; and PINKY DISCO, the pedal-powered mobile DJ booth on wheels that has been a huge hit with fans over the past two years.

Family-Focused Fun

Clockenflap is a family-friendly festival, and this year’s site will make it even easier for parents to enjoy the festival while their children take part in fun activities thanks to a new layout for the main stage that incorporates the family zone. Among the performers sure to delight junior Flappers are: Australian rockers REGURGITATOR and their specially crafted performance for kids called POGOGO SHOW; Bristol-based Japanese experimental singer-songwriter, instrument-maker and performance artist ICHI, who takes the one-man band to incredible and hilarious new heights; mesmerising close-up magician FERDINAND; and a selection of hands-on family activities by HONG KONG CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY MUSEUM, including the opportunity to create their own fantastical creatures and 3D robots.

Immersive Activities & Sponsored Giveaways

Clockenflap has also partnered with a curated selection of top brands to bring festivalgoers a variety of interactive activities and exclusive giveaways throughout the weekend. Much-loved jeans brand Levi’s® will once again host the LEVI’S® TAILOR SHOP to provide customised hot stamping badges and upcycling workshops for fans to complete their festival outfit, while the label will also bring an iconic Airstream polished aluminium travel trailer to enhance the festival atmosphere. Legendary hairdressing salon Vidal Sassoon will present the VS #IFOLLOWME HAIR FASHION SALON, where Clockenflappers can receive complimentary hair fashion to complete their festival look. KUEHNE & NAGEL is Clockenflap’s logistic partner, deliver a wide range of shipping and on-site logistic services.

Fabulous F&B: Eat, Drink & Chill With Friends

Fans will be spoiled for choice in terms of places to eat, drink and chill out during the festival thanks to a comprehensive collection of first-rate F&B options situated throughout the site. The RED BULL STAGE has become a firm favourite with Clockenflap fans, and the RED BULL BAR will once again be on hand to serve up signature Red Bull mixed drinks and cocktails to give festivalgoers an energy boost. This year, BROOKLYN BREWERY & CARLSBERG are located within easy reach of all the major stages, so you will never have to go far to enjoy a refreshing beverage with your friends. Clockenflappers, meanwhile, can also sip a craft brew from BROOKLYN BREWERY of New York, or chill out while enjoying coffees and pastries, as well as a tempting bar menu at KUUCHI CAFÉ & BAR BY BROOKLYN BREWERY.
