Expat Family in Shenzhen Launches 80s-inspired YouTube Show
The Our Chinese Life expat family: Mom Ursula, Dad David and rascals DeeDee and Freddy
Meet the Kay family, an Anglo/Dutch expat family living in Shenzhen, China who have become youtubers. Eight years ago they packed-up their bags and moved from the UK to Hangzhou, China – before later settling in Shenzhen. Armed with just two suitcases, a head full of Oriental dreams and a love of 1980’s pop-culture, they set sail to China, without knowing if they would thrive or fail. Fast-forward a few years and the Kays are still going strong.
As China’s role in the world becomes increasingly prominent, many people around the world wonder what the truth is about living in the world’s second largest economy – and it can be easy to swallow the myths and untruths about China without actually taking the time to find a more grounded, real-time account from people who have been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

In this new 80’s sitcom-style Youtube show – shot with a nostalgic VHS home-movie aesthetic – the Kay’s share their weird and wacky experiences of expat family life in The Middle Kingdom and beyond, light-heartedly covering a range of topics such as local cuisine, family-friendly attractions, vacation experiences, school-life, weekend excursions and – in the next scheduled episode – a look at life during the coronavirus epidemic.
