Cooking Class-make Zongzi To Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival

The 5th of May of the Chinese lunar calendar is the Dragon boat festival. You may think that it’s a festival for the dragon boat because of the English name, but it’s actually also for one of the greatest poets in China’s history, and his name is Qūyuán.

It was an old tradition to hold the dragon boat race on this day to worship their ancestors in ancient China, and the leader of Chuguo in the Warring States period decided to make this day a commemoration of Quyuan after he committed suicide by drowning himself with a rock in the Miluo river.

The people were so sad for Quyuan’s suicide, and they made Zongzi and threw them into the river to feed the river dragon so it would not eat Quyuan’s body.
