[Free] Solo Exhibition of French Photographer Jonk in China

shenzhenparty 2020-10-25

Innovative cultural hub Design Society values sustainability and balance of human inhabitation with nature. As a special program of the 2020 7th Edition of The Franco-Chinese Month of The EnvironmentWhen we left, _______ Naturalia: Chronicle of Contemporary Ruins — the first solo exhibition of French photographer Jonk in China is co-hosted by Design Society and the Consulate General of France in Guangzhou. His camera framed thousands of contemporary ruins in more than 50 countries all around the world.

Through four acts — Natural Proximity, Natural Penetration, Natural Growth and Natural Return — his beautiful though desolated photographs bring us to the sites of natural carnival when the human is gone, and interrogate the fundamental challenge for the human being: how to balance our relationship with nature?

The Franco-Chinese Month of The Environment was established by Embassy of France in China in 2014 and is held annually. It aims to raise public awareness of environmental issues and facilitate relevant collaboration. Born in 1985, Jonk left the financial industry at the age of 33, and had been focusing on his career as a photographer. He is devoted to the exploration of the relationship between nature and human being, and has published five personal catalogues. His works were seen on National GeographicArchDailyArchitectural DigestBBCLonely Planet, among others.

- Prologue -

In the overwhelming rebirth process of nature,

nature began to approach the exterior of an Italian villa;

Italy, 2016

and then penetrate the interior of a Belgian greenhouse;

Belgium, 2015

It has subsequently grown in the atrium of a Polish palace;

Poland, 2015

In the end, nature "swallows" the long-established manor.

- Act One: Natural Proximity -

Once the artifacts and buildings are abandoned by human beings,

nature starts reclaiming the place starting from the outsides quietly.

China, 2017

On the exterior walls of buildings, sculptures and fountains,

nature begins to appear and gradually prepares for the penetration…

- Act Two: Natural Penetration -

After laying a good foundation on the periphery of ruins,

nature gradually began to permeate everything discarded by human beings.

It includes castles, palaces, gardens, swimming pools...

Portugal, 2019

Nature unselfishly takes in all that man has thrown away

and overwhelmingly grow from the ruins.

- Act Three: Natural Growth -

In addition to being approached from the outside,

nature sometimes grows directly inside the buildings.

A small sapling will grow into a towering tree,

and ferns will climb all over the wall.

All of which are beautiful elements in the picture.

Abkhazia, 2019

Nature grows freely,

waiting for an opportunity

to blend with other natural elements,

laying the foundation for the return of nature...

- Act Four: Natural Return -

Through proximity, penetration, growth,

nature eventually returns to the abandoned artifacts

and encloses them in its arms.

Belgium, 2016

The abandoned cars, farms,

will eventually be "swallowed" by nature,

and integrated with nature as a whole.

Nature is more powerful than human beings, and more tolerant,

with a forgiving heart to accept human’s greed and desire.
