“两个人”，是 two persons 还是 two people？

有人问我，“两个人”英语是 two persons 还是 two people？
这个问题的关键点在于“人”的复数到底是 persons 还是 people，如果都是，那么两者区别又是什么？
从词源来说，这两个词都来自于拉丁语。person 先传到英语国家，也顺带着产生了 persons 这样的复数形式。people 是晚传到英语里的，person 的复数一开始就是persons”。后来 “people” 这个字也开始流传到英语国家，似乎取代了 “persons” 。
可是有些时候我们仍然能看到 persons。
person 比 people 更书面、更正式，比如一部电梯的说明说里，可以有这样的介绍：
This lift can hold a maximum of 15 persons.
这部电梯最高容纳15人。
由此可见，people 比 persons 表达的复数相对更偏口语。
另外还有几个原则注意：
Persons 指可以明确可数的一群人，比如：
There are three persons in the room.
房间里有三个人。
当然，people 也有这个功能，上句话也可以说：there are three people in the room。
但是对于一群“数不出来”的人，就不能用 persons 了。比如：
A lot of people were at the party.
派对上有很多人。
这里不可以用 persons，因为这里没有明确的人数。
最后总结一下，虽然语法书没有写出，但事实上people作为person的复数形式已成既定事实。
但是在某些特殊语境，比如司法界，专业报告中，可能会用到 “Persons” 这个英文单词。比如警方的“失踪人口”，英文是 “Missing persons”、“嫌疑人士”是 “Persons of interest” ，因为这种情况下，要求文本更 formal 更严肃。
