"这种动物"是 This kind of animal 还是 animals?

简单来说，前者才正确，后者是不对的，但实际情况没那么简单：
大多数的语言学家都认为，kind（或者sort, type, way）为单数时，前面必须用单数指示形容词或限定词来修饰 ，即this/that/any+kind/sort/type/way，而且后面必须接 “of + 单数名词”，如：
this kind of dog
this sort of dilemma
this type of book
this way of writing
如果当 kind, manner, sort, style, type 和 way 为复数时（kinds, sorts, types, ways），其前的指示形容词或限定词必须为复数，而且其后必须接 of + 复数可数名词，如：
these kinds of studies
those sorts of poems
all types of airplanes
但当 of 后面的名词为不可数名词 (物质名词和抽象名词) 时，这些名词可以是单数，但前面仍然可以用复数，如：
all sorts of wood (所有木头类型)
these ways of thinking (这些思考方式)
最后注意一点，上述是传统语法的规定，在口语或非正式文体中，仍有不同的单复数组合情况出现，如：these kind of men（但你要注意，这种表达不符合传统语法，但在口语中却相当常见）。
因此，在书面和正式用法中（特别是应试作文、商务信函等中）最好遵守上述传统语法的要求。
