“过年”的英语怎么说？可不是 pass year~

今天是除夕（the eve of Chinese new year），都在准备年夜饭了吧（reunion dinner），今天写一篇应景的小文，为大家助兴。

既然要过年了，那么咱们就聊聊这“过年”英语到底怎么说？

有人说，“过”是 pass，“年”是 year，那么“过年”就是 pass year 咯！

一般来说，按照这种思路翻译出来的，基本上都是中式英语。昨天还跟群里的小伙伴聊过这个问题：

我们先来说说中文里的“过年”到底啥意思吧：

据说“年”是古时候一个怪兽，经常出来吃人，但人们慢慢摸准了"年"有怕响、怕红、怕光的弱点，便想到许多抵御它的方法，比如贴红春联、燃放爆竹等。

其实另一个版本中，这个怪兽叫“夕”，我们说的“除夕”，就是把“夕”这头怪兽给“除掉”的意思。

原来，“过年”和“除夕”是同一个意思--“打怪兽”。

不过这些民间传说倒也逻辑自洽，佩服古人的想象力。

如果要跟老外介绍过年，除非要介绍这些古老源头，否则不需要牵扯怪兽什么的。

“过”其实就是“度过”、“庆祝”，英文中用 spend、celebrate、observe即可（尤其注意这个 observe，除了表示“观察”，还可以表示“庆祝”，是个正式的用词。）

中国人的“年”不是西方公历新年，那是1月1日，早已过去。

中国年完整说是“中国农历新年”，英文翻译为the Chinese Lunar New Year，简称 the Chinese New Year。

如果上下文明确指中国农历新年，甚至可以直接用 the New Year 来表示。

剩下的工作就是搭积木了：

过年：spend/celebrate/observe the Chinese New Year。

比如“你今年在哪儿过年”，英语可以说：

Where are you going to spend/celebrate/observe the Chinese New Year?

另外，我们还把“过年”还叫“过春节”，“春节”英文是 the Spring Festival，可以把上述的 the Chinese New Year 替换成 the Spring Festival。

在某些语境中，“过年”无需出现动词，直接用 the Chinese New Year 或者 the Spring Festival 即可，比如：

1. 快过年了。

译：It’ll soon be the Chinese New Year/ Spring Festival.

2. 他今年不回家过年。

译：He won’t be home for the Chinese New Year/ Spring Festival.

为了“防杠”，最后再用权威词典中的翻译镇个楼：

10. 拜年: pay a New Year's call

11. 穿新衣: wear new clothes

12. 拿压岁钱: take gift money

13. 祭财神: worship the God of Wealth

14. 打麻将: play mahjong  

15. 放烟花: set off fireworks

16. 放鞭炮: set off firecrackers

17. 逛庙会: go to the temple fair

18. 观赏舞龙/舞狮: watch lion/dragon dance

19. 吃饺子: eat Jiaozi

20. 烧香祈福: burn incense
