We talked to three president of China in the past thirty years, but I didn’t know that we talked to a single university until today when I come to Yale.

But we can also, from these three president, we can pretty much see that the average level of graduate of Yale is not even.

So, now entering our topic. My topic is “my personal story and through my personal story, the dream of China”.

I want to talk about five years in Chinese history. The first one I want to talk about is 1968.

That’s the year I was born.

It was a year of chaos worldwide, there were people marching in France, and in US, President Kennedy was assassinated, but I must say that none of that had anything to do with me.

That was also the year ’s famous call “I have a dream”, which was, and even though, that was also the year that Dr. was assassinated, and we lost him, we did not lose the words but the ideal became an ideal not just for the US, but also for the world.

But at that time the truth is that, not just for me, but for all the Chinses, not every individual has individual dream. We have national dream, we have the dream of our leaders, but not dream of individual people.

The distance between China and the America is very large, not less than the distance between the earth and moon.

I of course wasn’t paying attention of that, and I was very concerned whether I can eat. My family and I were clapped in cow shed where in cultural evolution, people were held for a time. And I was able to eat, because my grandfather was milk to me, my grandfather was able to hold very good negotiations with one of the keepers regarding the transform of milk.

It seems that my birth was not in auspicious time, it was not just my family or China, but the whole world into having issued than.

I was still living in a city that I was born, it was the village of 200, 000 people, which you must understand that it is a very small village.

It was 2000 kilometers from Beijing, so if we want to see the newspapers form Beijing, that will be three days later. So, for us, when you say news, which in Chinese is new things, that won’t new things to us.

My grandfather passed away that year, and my father died two years earlier. So my mother was left alone to raise myself and my brother, and she was the only wagers at that point, and she earning less than 10 dollars a month.

So, although I was ten years old at that time, if you ask me what my dream was, it is a very strange word, I have never thought of it.

My mother did not have a new marriage until today, she raised me and my brother alone.

And again there was no dream in the family, where mostly I think is to keep warm, because the city we lived at the time was closer to the Soviet Union.

But even though we did not see the hope, in fact there was a tremendous transformation not only for china but between china and US. That’s the year that everyone here should remember very clearly.

In December 26, 1978, China and the US reengaged in diplomatic relations, and that’s a very important transformation.

Two days later, that is on December 18, 1978, the Chinese people congress convene than to determine the opening and reform of policy, which we have all celebrating the beginning of thirty-first years of policy of reform.

So at that moment in history, the relationship of the two great nations’ impact of all those nations, including the poor far away family, was the moment when none of us was able to foresee the changes that would come at that moment.

Next, we talk about 1988, when I was 20 years old.

At that moment, I have move from that small village into Beijing and become a university student.

Many people have criticized and are criticizing now our national college entrance examination system and there are many reasons to do that, but we must recognize that there are advantages of this, that people like me, that ordinary poor individuals to change fate under that.

At that moment, the US was no longer so far away as it was, and it became more specific and concrete. And it’s no longer the monster that was called the American imperialism, but has become a series of concrete details.

I have already have a first taste of coca cola, and after that I thought that wow, the us and China are so close to each other, and I thought that it just tastes like Chinese medicine.

I was also a great fan of rock music at that point, and that’s the moment when Michael Jackson still looked good.

More importantly, china itself started changing quite a lot, because the reform has operated for ten years.

That year, china started marketization of many commodities.

Many of you now may think it unthinkable, but it was a very big progress in China because prices of many commodities at that moment was set by the government.

The marketization initialized many huge buying, because the public would thought, look, the price is dropped, who knows, if it may be not this low again, we’d better buy at least food price, so it’s also a big ?

And that also was another step forward closer to market economy.

Of course, at that time we did not know the downsides of market economy. either.

Of course , that was also a good year for Yale University, because that was the year another Yale graduate became US president.

NowI’d like to talk about 1988, when I was 30 years old. I had already become an anchor at CCTV. And more importantly, I has become a father of a one- year-old child. I became truly understand that whenever I did everything, I need not only thing so much just about me.

In US-china relations, there was also an important event in that year. That was because Clinton visited China.

Of course in US, you maybe remember the sex scandals. But in China, we remember this visit to China.

You may remember when he visited the Great Hall of the People, there was an open press conference that he held with Chinese journalists. And then he made a speech at Peking University. And again, it was my broadcast on both of those occasions, I was the anchor managing my broadcast.

You may remember as well that on a live broadcast in his meeting with Jiang Zemin, they talk directly on live camera about human rights, about the xxx incident, about many other xxx incidents.

He also at his discussion at Peking University was very free and easy, his discussion was about the American dream and his perspective about that. And the entire event was broadcast live on TV in China.

When Clinton was leaving China, he was asked a question that what was your deepest impression of China? He says that my deepest impression in China is that I was very surprised that both of those events were broadcast live on television in China.

But the truth is you know, the live broadcast brought praise for China, but some criticism for the US.

Only a small criticism.

There was an interpreter following president Clinton at the event, who was provided by the US. And I guess that was someone better than my interpreter today.

The truth is that many audiences know that President Clinton is speaking, but what he said, actually, didn’t quite understand.

So I made a comment that stated that if the America does need to understand China, they do need to start from the language.

Many of the US media there that day, picked up on the phrase, it was broadcast over year again. But the truth is that I said something else, which I am not sure whether did they pick up.

I said that that for two countries like the America and China, it is always better to talk face to face than back to back.

It was also earlier that year, for the first time that I began to drive a car.

That was another new thing for me that I never imagine that the average Chinese person can drive their own car.

So, that also impression I will never forget. It’s always the first time that you will never release.
