谷雨 Grain Rain

谷雨的英文名为“Grain Rain”，其中grain有谷物、粮食之意，rain为雨水。此外谷雨也称为“第六节气”，英文名为“6th solar term”，6th 即sixth，译为第六；solar term是固定词组，译为节气。偶尔也有人把节气翻译为“solar period”，因为period和term都有时期之意。

谷雨源自古人“雨生百谷”之说，每年4月19日～21日，太阳到达黄经30°时即为“谷雨”，正所谓“清明断雪，谷雨断霜”。谷雨节气的到来，意味着寒潮天气基本结束，气温回升加快，有利于谷类农作物的生长。

Guyu was originated from the ancient version "rain germinate all grains", every April 19th to 21st, the sun reaches 30 degrees in longitude is Guyu, it is the so-called "Qingming off the snow, Guyu off the frost". When the Guyu is coming, it means that the cold weather has basically ended, the temperature rises faster, which is benefit for the growth of cereal crops.

Origins

Grain Rain is one of the 24 solar terms. It originated from the ancient saying that “rain gives life to all grains”. “The Pure Brightness means stop of snow, and the Grain Rain means the stop of frost”. According to the weather experts, the Grain Rain is the last solar term in spring. The coming of Grain Rain means that the cold and humid weather almost comes to an end and the temperature will rise again quickly.

谷雨是二十四节气之一。谷雨源自古人“雨生百谷”之说。“清明断雪，谷雨断霜”，气象专家表示，谷雨是春季最后一个节气，谷雨节气的到来意味着寒潮天气基本结束，气温回升加快。

In the Grain Rain, the weather is mild and there is an obvious increase of rainfall, which has a great influence on growth of grain crops. The appropriate rainfall will contribute to the reviving and growth of winter crops as well as the sowing and seeding emerging in spring. The ancient saying “rain gives life to all grains” shows the Grain Rain’s significance of climate on modern agriculture. However, the excessive rainfall and the severe drought always result in damages and may influence crop production in the later stage.

谷雨节气时天气温和，雨水明显增多，对谷类作物的生长发育关系很大。雨水适量有利于越冬作物的返青拔节和春播作物的播种出苗，古代所谓“雨生百谷”，反映了“谷雨”的现代农业气候意义。但雨水过量或严重干旱，则往往造成危害，影响后期产量。

In ancient China, the Grain Rain is divided into three periods: the first period when duckweeds begin to grow; the second period when the cuckoos flap their wings; and the third period when the hoopoes stand on mulberries. This means that after the Grain Rain, the rainfall will increase and duckweeds begin to grow. After that, cuckoos begin to remind people to sow seeds. Then, hoopoes can be seen on mulberries.

中国古代将谷雨分为三候：“第一候萍始生；第二候呜鸠拂其羽；第三候为戴胜降于桑。”是说谷雨后降雨量增多，浮萍开始生长，接着布谷鸟便开始提醒人们播种了，然后是桑树上开始见到戴胜鸟。

After the Grain Rain, the rainfall increases and air humidity grows gradually. The peach blossom and the apricot blossom contend in beauty and fascination. The poplar catkins and the willow catkins are flying all through the air. The grain crops thrive as well. Cuckoos are singing at night. Peonies begin to thrive. Cherries are red and mature. The natural scenery tells us that it is the late spring.

谷雨节气后降雨增多，空气中的湿度逐渐加大，桃花、杏花竞相开放，杨絮、柳絮四处飞扬，谷类作物也茁壮成长。杜鹃夜啼，牡丹吐蕊，樱桃红熟，自然景物告示人们：时至暮春了。

民间有“谷雨时节种谷天”的说法。春雨贵如油，庄稼喝饱了水，便开始舒展身子长个儿了。

Grain Rain brings a marked increase in temperature and rainfall and the grains grow faster and stronger. It's a key time to protect the crops from insect pests.

谷雨带来了温度和降水量的明显增长，谷物成长地愈发快速和结实。这段时间是防虫蛀谷的关键期。

沙尘暴兴

受北方冷空气影响，再加上土质疏松干燥，谷雨期间时常会出现强沙尘暴等大风灾害天气。

Grain Rain falls between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, with infrequent cold air moving to the south and lingering cold air in the north. From the end of April to the beginning of May, the temperature rises much higher than it does in March. With dry soil, an unsteady atmosphere and heavy winds, gales and sandstorms become more frequent.

谷雨降临在春末和夏初之间，伴随着少量冷空气南下，北方的冷空气依旧停滞不走。四月底到五月初，温度上升的比三月要快得多。受土壤干燥、大气不稳定和强风影响，狂风和沙尘暴变得更加频繁。

喝雨前茶

“春山谷雨前，并手摘芳烟。”谷雨前采摘的茶味道醇厚，香气浓烈。约三五知己或一人独处于静室，沏一壶清茶，细品春日融融，这便是中国人独享的意趣。

There is an old custom in southern China that people drink tea on the day of Grain Rain. Spring tea during Grain Rain is rich in vitamins and amino acids, which can help to remove heat from the body and is good for the eyes. It is also said that drinking tea on this day would prevent bad luck.

中国南方有个习俗：人们要在谷雨当天饮茶。谷雨期间的春茶富含维他命和氨基酸，对身体散热和明目都有帮助。还有一种说法：谷雨喝茶可抵挡厄运。

吃香椿

吃香椿又叫“吃春”，谷雨时期的香椿鲜嫩清爽，营养丰富，凉拌、炒蛋或炸成“椒盐香椿鱼”都十分美味。

People in northern China have the tradition to eat the vegetable toona sinensis during Grain Rain. An old Chinese saying goes "toona sinensis before the rain is as tender as silk". The vegetable is nutritious and can help to strengthen the immune system. It is also good for the stomach and skin.

中国北方人有谷雨吃香椿的传统。俗话说：“雨前椿芽嫩如丝”，这种蔬菜营养丰富，有助于增强免疫系统，还有利于健胃护肤。

祭海

部分沿海地区的渔民会在谷雨举办祭海活动，渔民们向海神献上祭品，以求出海平安和收获满满。

Grain Rain marks the start of the fishermen’s first voyage of the year. The custom dates back more than 2,000 years ago, when people believed they owed a good harvest to the gods, who protected them from the stormy seas. People would worship the sea and stage sacrifice rites on the Grain Rain festival, praying for a bountiful harvest and a safe voyage for their loved ones.

谷雨标志着渔民们在这一年里的首次出海。该习俗可追溯到两千多年前，当时人们认为是神灵保佑他们免受风暴袭击，获得丰收。在谷雨庆典仪式上，人们会祭海并举行相关仪式，祈求丰收，也祈求所爱之人出海平安。
