1. Matilda kept thinking about the marvelous party. Then she realized, sadly, that the wonderful evening was over, all over.
玛蒂尔达一直在想那个奇妙的舞会。她伤心地意识到,美妙的夜晚结束了,一切都结束了。
2. Matilda walked to a chair, slumped down wearily in it, and waited in her evening gown. She did not have the strength to get up and go to bed. She was too exhausted to move or to think.
玛蒂尔达走到一张椅子前,疲倦地一屁股坐在椅子上,穿着晚礼服等着。她没有力气起身去睡觉。她累极了,累得无法动弹,无法思考了。
3. He slumped back, gulping for air.
他一屁股坐了回去,大口地喘着气。
4. By the end of the the week, they had lost all hope. Mr. Loisel shook his head and said, “We must find a way to replace the necklace.”
到了周末,他们已经失去了所有的希望。Loisel先生摇摇头说:“我们必须想办法把项链换掉。”
5. The next day they went from shop to shop, searching for a necklace that looked like the one they had lost.
第二天,他们从一家商店到另一家商店,寻找一条看起来像他们丢失的项链。
6. They brought the money to the jeweler and left the shop with the diamond necklace.
他们把钱带到珠宝商那儿,带着钻石项链离开了商店。
7. Life went on like this for ten years. At the end of ten years they had paid off the whole debt.

8. But once in a while, at the end of a long day, she sat looking out of the window. She thought about the wonderful party she went to long ago. She remembered how beautiful she was and how everyone admired her.
但偶尔,在漫长的一天结束时,她坐在那里看着窗外。她想起了她很久以前参加的那个美妙的舞会。她记得自己有多漂亮,每个人多么羡慕她。
9. How would things have turned out if she had not lost that necklace? Who knows? Life is strange and full of twists. One little thing can make all the difference.
如果她没有丢失那条项链,事情会怎样?谁知道呢?生活很奇怪,充满了曲折。一件小事就能改变一切。
10. Her friend did not recognize her and was startled that a stranger knew her first name.
她的朋友没有认出她,她很吃惊一个陌生人知道她的名字。
11. She looked at him with startled eyes.

12. In spite of his disappointment, he managed a weak smile.

13. We had just finished our meal, when there was a loud knocking at the door. Dupin opened it. There stood Mr. Germain, the Chief of the Paris Police.

14. We welcomed him warmly, for he was an old acquaintance whom we had not seen for a long time.

15. He was completely baffled by her strange behaviour.
他完全被她怪异的举动搞糊涂了。
16. The question baffled me completely and I couldn’t answer it.
这个问题把我彻底难倒了,我答不出来。
17. She whistled to the dog to come back.
她打了个呼哨把狗唤回来。
18. I looked everywhere in the house. I checked every place where it might be hidden. I searched every corner and crack where the letter could possibly be concealed. I finally abandoned the search when I was convinced that it was not possible to find the letter.
我在房子里到处找。我检查了所有可能藏匿的地方。我搜遍了每一个角落和可能藏着信的裂缝。当我确信不可能找到那封信时,我最终放弃了寻找。
19. Then turning to Dupin, he asked, “What would you advise me to do?” Without pausing for a moment, Dupin responded, “Search the house again.”
然后他转向都宾,问道:“你建议我怎么办?”都宾没有停顿片刻,回答道:“再搜查一下房子。”
20. He pulled a small notebook out of his pocket. Then slowly and carefully, he proceeded to read aloud an accurate description of the missing letter. When he finished reading, he left.
他从口袋里掏出一个小笔记本。然后,他慢慢地,仔细地,开始大声朗读对那封丢失的信的准确描述。他读完就走了。
21. When I arrived, Dupin greeted me at the door. We chatted pleasantly for a while. Finally I asked, “...”
我到的时候,都宾在门口迎接我。我们愉快地聊了一会儿。最后我问:“……”
22. But, as I knew in advance, it was all in vain. We didn’t find the letter.
但是,正如我事先知道的,这一切都是徒劳的。我们没有找到那封信。
23. I was astonished. The Chief stood there with his mouth open, staring at Dupin. The Chief finally recovered. He grabbed a pen, wrote a check for fifty thousand francs and handed it to Dupin.
我很惊讶。局长张着嘴站在那里,盯着都宾。局长终于回过神来。他抓起一支笔,开了一张五万法郎的支票,递给都宾。
24. He seemed upset but quickly recovered himself.
他显得心烦意乱,但很快静下心来。
25. With a trembling hand, Germain unfolded the letter, glanced at the words, and dashed wildly out of the room. He had not uttered a syllable/ word since Dupin asked him to write the check.
杰曼颤抖着一只手,打开信,瞥了一眼信上的字,然后狂奔出了房间。自从都宾让他开支票以来,他没说一句话。
26. Then I realized that the Minister might have left the letter out in the open, right under everyone’s nose. With this idea in mind, I put on a pair of dark glasses, and went, early one morning, to his house.
后来我意识到,部长可能把信放在公开的地方,就在每个人的眼皮底下。抱着这样的想法,我戴上一副墨镜,一大早就去了他家。
27. I saw nothing suspicious until my eyes suddenly stopped on a box.
我没有看到任何可疑的东西,直到我的眼睛突然停在一个盒子上。
28. I said goodbye to the Minister and departed. But I purposely leftone of my gloves behind.
我向部长道别后就离开了。但我故意留下一只手套。
29. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
在等轮到她溜冰的时候,劳丽非常紧张。她知道今天是她复出非常重要一天。
30. “Hello, Laurie,” Kathy said, suddenly bursting through the door. “Welcome back to competition! We’ve missed you these last six months.”
“嗨,劳丽,”凯西突然冲进门说道,“欢迎再次参加比赛!这六个月我们都很想你。”
31. He burst into the room without knocking.
他没敲门就闯进了房间。
32. “She’s the one you have to beat this year,” Kathy replied as she hurried out, slamming the door behind her.
“她是今年你必须打败的人,”凯西一边回答,一边急忙出门,砰地关上门。
33. For a moment Laurie sat quietly, getting used to the feeling of being back.
劳丽静静地坐了一会儿,渐渐习惯了回来的感觉。
34. She thought back to that awful, rainy night when she and Mom were driving home after a practice session.
她回想起那个可怕的雨夜,她和妈妈在训练课后开车回家。
35. Later, examinations at the hospital showed that she had damaged her right knees badly. She would need three months to heal and three more months of treatment and practice if she hoped to regain her skill.
后来,她去医院检查,结果显示右膝盖严重受损。她需要三个月才能痊愈,如果她希望重获技能,还需要三个月的治疗和练习。
36. The young woman dumped some of their belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a thud. “Hi, I’m Jinny Jordan,” she said.
年轻女子把一些东西扔在椅子上。袋子砰的一声掉到了地上。“嗨,我是金妮·乔丹。”她说道。
37. She tripped and fell with a thud.
她绊了一下,重重地摔倒在地。
38. My heart started to thud, and my mouth was dry.

39. Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door swung open.
金妮看着散落在地板上的衣服和设备。当她开始收拾东西时,门打开了。
40. Papers were scattered here and there on the floor.
地板上到处散落着文件。
41. As she laced her skates, she thought to herself, “That’s funny. Jinny has a chance to win tonight, and she doesn’t even know what she did with her music.”
当她系上冰鞋的鞋带时,她心里想:“真有趣。金妮今晚有机会获胜,但她都不知道自己对自己的音乐做了什么。”
42. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends. Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table.
劳丽站起来,走到椅子前,又做了几次膝盖弯曲。突然,她看见梳妆台脚后面有一个深绿色的小东西。
43. Laurie stood motionless for what must have been only seconds, yet it seemed like years while she thought about what to do.
劳丽一动不动地站了几秒钟,但似乎过了好几年她才想到该怎么办。
44. “All I have to do is forget that I found this,” she said to herself. “If Jinny doesn’t have her music, she might as well not skate. Jinny would look pretty ridiculous skating without music. And then I would win.”
“我要做的就是忘记我发现了这个,”她自言自语道,“如果金妮没有音乐,她还不如不溜冰呢。如果没有音乐,金妮滑冰看起来会很可笑,然后我就赢了。”
45. Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered, “Do I really want to win that much? Does winning mean so much to me that I’d be willing to cheat for it?”
劳丽想到这件事时微微发了一下抖。然后她想:“我真的那么想赢吗?赢真的对我那么重要吗?重要到我愿意为此作弊吗?”
46. Laurie hesitated for a second. Then she pulled herself together and said, “Tell Jinny that I found her tape.”
劳丽犹豫了一下。然后她定下神来(很快恢复了镇定),说道:“告诉金妮我找到了她的带子。”
47. For a moment she was too stunned to hear what he was saying, but she pulled herself together to hear the rest of the story.
她一时间吓得目瞪口呆,也没听见他在说些什么,不过她很快又回过神来,继续听下半截的故事。
48. The audience applauded from time to time, enthusiastically supporting her in her comeback.
观众不时鼓掌,热情支持她复出。
49. As she completed it, she heard the audience gasp. When her turn was over, applause filled the stadium.
当她完成这个动作时,她听到了观众惊讶的声音。她这一轮结束时,全场掌声雷动。
50. As she skated off the ice, she waved to the crowd and quickly made her way to the exit where her coach ran up to her and hugged her.
当她滑出冰面时,她向人群挥手,迅速走向出口,她的教练跑过来拥抱她。
51. When she heard the bell ringing, the old lady rose from her chair and made her way to the door.
老太太听到铃响,便从椅子上站起来,向门口走去。
52. “You did it, Laurie!” she said. “You skate perfectly and beautifully. I think that you’ve won.
“你做到了,劳丽!”她说,“你滑得又完美又漂亮。我想你赢了。”
53. Laurie said nothing, but she smiled as she took a seat and waited to see what marks the judges would give her. When the marks appeared, Laurie knew that she had beaten Jinny Jordan and everyone else.
劳丽什么也没说,但她微笑着坐下来,等着看评委会给她多少分。分数出来时,劳丽知道她打败了金妮·乔丹和其他所有人。
54. “Laurie, you won! You won!” Kathy screamed, as she rushed up to her. “I guess I did,” was all Laurie could say.
“劳丽,你赢了!你赢了!”凯西冲到她跟前尖叫着。劳里所能说的只有“我想是的”。
55. As she walked back to the dressing room, Laurie thought about Jinny’s music tape. She remembered wondering whether or not to return it. “But no one will ever know how close I really came to losing,” Laurie said softly to herself.
回到更衣室时,劳丽想起了金妮的音乐磁带。她记得当时还在想要不要还。“但没人会知道我差一点就输了,”劳丽轻声对自己说。
