The New Math: 1 Mooncake = 1 Bottle of Wine
Wine is the new mooncake.
Seriously, do you know how many calories a mooncake contains?
Even your standard traditional mooncake--with a baked crust and lotus seed paste filling--has over 700 calories!
By some counts, that's equal to two cheeseburgers. Two slices of pizza. Or a typical bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from France.
Eat two mooncakes and you just had the caloric equivalent of two bottles of wine. Eat more and your body might start resembling the shape of the moon itself.

Of course, not all wines have equal calories. It largely depends on alcohol levels and how much "residual" sugar remains in the bottle after production. But you can easily find many different bottles featuring fewer or about the same calories as a single mooncake.
That goes for red wines – which typically have more calories than white wines – like the Cambrico Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere from Chile on offer right now. (You also get fancy pants packaging from Plastered8).

But maybe your attitude is, "Screw those calories, I want wine *and* mooncakes."
Let's return to our lotus seed paste mooncake.

Our tastes all differ but a popular pairing for such a rich and heavy treat is a sweet wine – give De Bortoli 'Deen' Botrytis Semillon a try.
(Botrytis, also called "Noble Rot", is a fungus. It causes the grapes to dehydrate – think of a raisin – but means the remaining liquid is extra sweet and flavorful.)
This Semillon oozes fruits – from tropical to citrus to stone, such as peaches and apricots. And it has the honey character to match with that oh-so-rich mooncake.
If you find such wines too ripe and sweet, you can try the Moscato d'Asti wines we discussed a few weeks ago. These semi-sweet wines are much lighter and their bubbly nature will clean your palate after that mooncake.

And if you start to worry about all those calories from enjoying both a bottle of wine and a mound of mooncakes, there is one easy way to cut them in half – share it all with a friend.
