Guests can enjoy the five-wine buffet for just RMB139 at Store 32 from 6 PM onwards September 29. The local wines, just in time for China’s National Day on October 1, are from Ningxia brand Xiao Pu, also known as Petit Garden.

Xiao Pu has gained popularity among followers of the small but dedicated and growing group of natural wine fans in China. While winemaker Ian Dai lacks a winery, he has been able to source grapes, rent equipment and build a brand using a “minimal intervention” philosophy. In essence, it means letting the grapes and their juices do the talking by minimizing the additives and filtering used in much of the modern wine-making industry.

Xiao Pu's Bubbly Wine

The CHEERS buffet will include Xiao Pu’s bubbly wine made in a style known as pét-nat, or pétillant-naturel, which roughly translates to natural sparkling. This style pre-dates the Champagne method and is made by bottling wine that is still fermenting and will thus create carbonation. It’s a lighter and usually softer and cloudier style of bubbly.

The other Ningxia wine is a red blend named The Gathering, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Marselan. This fruity medium-bodied wine has soft tannins along with red berry and red date character.

Tussock Jumper Monastrell

That will be fun to taste beside Tussock Jumper Monastrell from Spain, made with grapes from organic vineyards. The grape Monastrell also goes by the name Mouvedre and Mataro, and in this case makes a fresh smooth full-bodied wine with dark berry character and a slight pepperiness.

Rounding out the buffet is the floral semi-dry Portuguese white wine from Foral de Lisboa. This fruity wine is a blend of three grapes—Muscat, Arinto and Gernao Pires—and fairly light at about 10 percent alcohol.
