近日,温肯建筑系David Vardy教授参与设计的建筑作品《离线公园(Offline Park)》成功入围了由陆地艺术发电计划(Land Art Generator Initiative)发起的国际挑战赛,并获得了2023年德国国家花园展览会(The German National Garden Show Mannheim)的展出机会。这一国际展览会将吸引来自世界各地的200万名参展者和观众,也为可再生能源的发展提供了一个创新的平台……
作为备受瞩目的建筑学家,Vardy教授在建筑设计领域拥有丰富的经验和出色的成果。他的作品充满创新和艺术的气息,彰显了对建筑设计的独特见解,也为城市注入了新的美学和活力。此外,他还担任了温州肯恩大学设计实验室(WKDL: Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab)的负责人,通过建筑竞赛和社会项目实现自己的理念,为学生提供了开发和创新的学习环境,为他们日后的正式工作打下良好基础。
在本期“师说”栏目中,我们将与David Vardy教授对话,了解他如何用建筑增彩温州,将灵活性融入教育。
关于David Vardy, 特聘副教授
David Vardy是温州肯恩大学建筑与设计学院的特聘副教授,同时也是温州肯恩大学设计实验室(WKDL: Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab)的负责人。此外,他还是英国DVA建筑事务所的主理人、高等教育学院(SFHEA)的高级研究员、英国皇家建筑师协会中国分会(RIBA)的成员、美国建筑师协会上海分会(Assoc. AIAS)的准成员,并且担任中国和英国建筑学院的定期客座评论员。五年前,他来到中国,成为一名以学术为基础的执业建筑师。他的设计作品和教学成果在国际上获得广泛认可,曾获得多项奖项,并在国际公开竞赛中获得一等奖。
耕耘建筑设计17年,持续高质量创作
“在我11岁的时候就想当一名建筑师了。”当问及如何与建筑结缘时,Vardy教授这样说道,“在我的家庭里有人是建筑师,在他们的影响下,我也梦想能成为这样的人。”
在家人的熏陶下,Vardy教授成为了小时候最想成为的人。从业17年来,他一直致力于公共服务的课题,奖项、展览和出版成绩斐然,获得了国际高度认可。今年,他与其设计团队又有了新的创作进展——离线公园 (Offline Park)。
离线公园 (Offline Park)
这是一个关于可持续发展的作品,将在德国参赛并展出,届时会有大约两百万人来参展。离线公园由太阳能系统供能,公园内会装置太阳能球 (Solar Ball)以捕获四面八方的能量。公园内还设有封锁系统,意味着当你踏进离线公园时,不能使用手机,也连接不上网络了。
“现在的年轻人很难停止使用电子产品,他们总是手机不离手,不能找到一个安静的地方来放松身心,” Vardy教授说道,“离线公园是一方和平安乐的净土,远离手机才能更好的融入自然、感受自然。离线公园为公园建设提供了未来模式”。
02建筑与自然共存,用艺术点亮山水温州
对于从小生活在群山环绕的苏格兰的Vardy教授来说,温州独特的异国水乡体验给他带来了极大的冲击与灵感。他说:“当我从欧洲来到中国时,我开始欣赏建筑的复杂性与自然的美感,并思考如何将建筑融入自然。我在寻找二者的和谐。”这便是他建筑理念的来源之一。
为了更好地实现自己的创作理念,并将创作服务于社会,Vardy教授通过温肯设计实验室(WKDL: Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab)助力了公共服务和社会发展。同时,WKDL不仅为学生提供了别样的实践机会与环境,也成为了师生们发挥创意与实践活动的平台。目前,他已带领团队完成了一些可持续发展和公共服务相关的课题。

21年11月,他与学生参加了在上海西岸穹顶艺术中心举办的第三届FutureLab艺术与设计创新未来教育博览会,现场1:1还原美国著名建筑设计师迈克尔·格雷夫斯的书房,并融入温州村庄特色,实现了中西合璧;2022年初,在韩国庆尚北道农业研究所+博物馆设计国际竞赛中,提案“土地之作”以农业建筑与可持续发展为中心理念,阐释了让建筑如同农作物一样,成为地球对人类的馈赠的思想,方案获得了四等奖……

还有正在设计的温肯校园大门。Vardy教授从中国山水画中汲取灵感,将传统绘画与古典园林的元素和关系互相转化,岩石照明(太阳能)、排水湖泊(可持续排水系统)、钢铁和玻璃(可回收)等等,将实用的材料融入园林景观,大门的设计体现了是中国传统美学和西方建筑风格的碰撞交融。“我们希望通过WKDL可以给学生提供更多的机会展现自己的艺术价值。” Vardy教授希望WKDL不仅仅是自己创作理念的体现,更是学生们艺术创作的平台,并能共同为温州的发展助力, 在村庄建设与乡村振兴上做出艺术性的贡献。
没有标准定式答案,把灵活性融入教学
“我并没有严格按照传统学术界所分配的标准,即40%的精力投入教学,40% 参与科研实践,20% 服务社会,而是尽力找到三者的融合发展。”人生没有定式答案,当被问及如何平衡教育者、科研实践者、社区服务者这三种角色时,Vardy教授如是分享道。
更具体地说,这三种角色之间没有具体的界限,在教学过程中与学生的思维碰撞所迸发出的新灵感,可以帮助他们一起寻找科研的答案;而在研究过程中,他也会思考怎样用科研成果服务于社区的发展。正是有了这种无界限的思维,Vardy教授带领的温肯设计实验室(WKDL)不仅成为了学院的创意实践活动所在地,还是建筑和设计实践的研究中心,更是温肯立足本土、致力于解决社会实际问题的设计实验室。

“每年我们都会招募优秀的建筑与设计学院学子来WKDL实习,参与项目组,为社区发展贡献出独特的一份力。” Vardy教授也非常高兴越来越多建筑与设计学院的学子能加入实验室,把他们平时所学应用到实际生活。

当被问及现在大学生最应该培养的品质时,Vardy教授毫不犹豫地说:灵活性,即在日新月异、变幻莫测的世界发展中摈弃定式思维,积极寻求新的可能性。诚然,在人工智能时代,Chat GPT等高级智能算法程序给所有人当头棒喝,催使人们拥有灵活应变能力。而对学生灵活性的培养,也同样贯穿于他的日常教学中。“当我需要给予学生作品反馈时,我不会告诉他们所谓的‘正确’答案,而是留足空间让学生自己思考把控作品。” 他认为这种教学模式,不仅能帮助学生学会选择,还能提升他们的表达和辩护能力,清楚认识到坚守己见的重要价值,又或是及时改变的正确性。此外,他也希望温肯学子能珍惜在大学里低成本试错的机会——明白这个世界不是非黑即白,也并非只有对和错两种答案,学会在变化中不断调整转化思维,才能更好迎接未来的挑战。
Interview with Prof. David Vardy: Adding Color to Wenzhou with Architecture, Infusing Flexibility into Education
David Vardy is a distinguished associate professor of Michael Graves College at Wenzhou-Kean University. He is highly acclaimed as an architect with extensive experience and outstanding achievements in the design field. His works are full of innovation and artistic flair, injecting new aesthetics and vitality into cities and showcasing his unique insights into architectural design. This year, his work "Offline Park" successfully won the Award of Final Shortlisting and selection for exhibition at The German National Garden Show Mannheim. This international exhibition will attract 2,000,000 exhibitors and audiences worldwide, providing an innovative platform for the development of renewable energy.
In addition, he is the director of the Wenzhou-Kean University Design Lab (WKDL), which provides students with an open and innovative learning environment and cultivates a group of talented rising architects. This time, we invite Professor David Vardy to share how he has been enriching Wenzhou with architecture and incorporating flexibility into education.
01 With a 17-year Architectural Design Career, Prof. Vardy Continues to Produce High-Quality Works
Prof. Vardy has dreamed of being an architect since he was 11 years old. Under the influence of his family, he became the person he most wanted to be when he was young. During his 17-year teaching career, his awards, exhibitions and publications have earned him high international recognition.
This year, he and his design team have a new creative development - "Offline Park". The project generates solar energy (a solar canopy) while reducing energy-in-use (placing smartphones and data consumption on pause). A micro spherical solar mesh is able to receive the sun’s beam from varying directions, and so can be incorporated into an undulating surface such as that formed by a mesh or textile.
OFFLINE PARK is a forest, a Faraday cage, a butterfly garden, and the protective veiling of various multi-purpose platforms and courtyards. OFFLINE PARK provides a future model for park construction as a public place that is also private (no data); and where new cultures of disconnection and reconnection are grown. Prof. Vardy has been working on the topic of public service, and there will be more projects to meet with you in the future.
02 Let Architecture Coexists with Nature, he Lighted up Wenzhou Landscape with Art
In 2018, Prof. Vardy came to China and started a new life. The unique experience of Wenzhou's watery region has brought him great impact and inspiration. Thus, he has been looking for harmony between architecture and nature, which is one of the sources of his architectural ideas.
In order to better realize his creative ideas and serve society through his work, Prof. Vardy organized and established Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab (WKDL). WKDL provides students with a unique educational environment, not only offering a platform for creative expression and practical activities but also serving as a practice base for WKU’s public service and social development initiatives.
At present, Prof. Vardy has led his team to complete several projects related to sustainable development and public services. A recent project is WKU Main-Gate. It is conceived as a contemporary shan-shui-hua; a ‘landscape-of-technology’; with elements and relationships of traditional painting and classical gardens transmuted, as a new nature of utility, artifice, ethic, and symbol; a nature of rock-lighting (solar) and drainage lakes (sustainable- drainage-system), steel and glass (recycled). Integrating practical things into the landscape, the design of the gate reflects the integration of traditional Chinese aesthetics and Western architectural styles. "We hope that through WKDL we can provide more opportunities for students to show their artistic value." Prof. Vardy hopes that WKDL will not only embodies his own creative ideas but also serves as a platform for students to create art and jointly make artistic contributions to the village construction and rural revitalization of Wenzhou.
03 Incorporating Flexibility into Teaching, He Believes that There Is No Standard Answer
Prof. David Vardy strives to find integration and development in his roles as an educator, scientific research practitioner, and community servicer. He believes that there is no specific boundary between these roles. His boundless thinking led to the creation of the Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab (WKDL), which serves as a research center for architectural and design practice, a design laboratory for Wenzhou-Kean University, and a hub for solving practical problems for the society based on community development. Each year, outstanding design students will be selected as interns to work at WKDL, participate in project teams, and contribute to community development. Professor Vardy is pleased with the increasing number of students joining the lab and applying their knowledge to real-life situations.
Professor Vardy emphasizes the importance of flexibility and abandoning stereotyped thinking in today's ever-changing world. As we live in the era of artificial intelligence, advanced intelligent algorithm programs such as Chat GPT give everyone a sharp warning, urging people to have flexible adaptability. He integrates the development of student flexibility into his daily teaching by leaving enough space for students to think about and control their work. This teaching model helps students learn how to choose and improves their ability to express and advocate their opinions. He hopes that WKU students can cherish the opportunity of low-cost trial and error opportunities in college, learn to constantly adjust and transform their thinking, and finally solve future challenges beautifully.
