In 1943, wartime capital Chongqing, Zong Qixiang, a college student of art, held a Chinese painting exhibition. He showed mountain-and-water paintings that depict illuminated night scenes of Chongqing.
1943年的战时陪都重庆，一个叫宗其香的美院大学生举办了自己的中国画个展。他展出的山水画描绘了山城灯火摇曳的夜景。
Among those who were impressed by the paintings was modern master Xu Beihong. He praised Zong's creativity in an article, "He adopts Chinese painting techniques to present the twinkling lights of Chongqing's night. ...He has made a major breakthrough."
他的画给许多观众留下了深刻印象，其中就有徐悲鸿先生。徐先生在一篇文章中如此赞赏宗其香的创作力：“他用中国画笔墨作重庆夜景灯光明灭，……此为中国画的一大创举。”
Ancient Chinese painters depicted night views in a very symbolic way, being unable to show the luminous feel of light. While Zong Qixiang (1917-99) found a distinctive approach: He well arranged the diverse shades of ink to show the varying brightness and graduation of colors at night.
古人作夜景画大多以象征性的笔法，并未将光感度描绘出来。而宗其香在这一方面找到了突破口。他通过墨色的浓淡变化，捕捉住了黑暗中光的不同层次和色彩的饱和变化。
I find words are powerless when I first see Zong's night view series at a commemorative exhibition of him now at the museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts. He taught at the school for decades till retirement.
“词穷”是我第一次看到宗先生夜景系列作品时的感受。这些作品就陈列在中央美院为纪念宗先生百年诞辰的纪念展上。宗先生在美院辛勤执教几十年直至退休。
His oeuvre includes the most enthralling nights across the country, the Three Gorges, Huangpu River, Lijiang River, ...
宗先生的创作中囊括了中国最美的夜景，从三峡、黄浦江再到漓江。
He captured the sparkling lights that glorified small mountain towns, bridges, towers and sailing boats, making the places in his works a spiritual destination for the audience.
他笔墨下的点点光明照亮山中的城镇、桥梁、高塔和航船。他画中的景致为观众提供了一个心向往之所在。
His love of nature and concerns of people are also shown in his landscapes, depictions of ethnic groups and watercolors of constructions in the early stage of New China.
宗先生对于自然的热爱和人的关怀也体现在他创作的其他风景和少数民族生活的中国画中。他的水彩画大多表现了建国初期建设的景象。
