President Xi Jinping will attend the 9th BRICS summit slated for Sept 3 to 5, in the southeastern Chinese seaside city of Xiamen. It will be Xi's fifth time to attend the annual summit.

Here we walk down memory to capture Xi's moments at previous summits. Come with us.

Earlier in July, President Xi said in a speech at the G20 Hamburg summit that there are currently positive signs for the world's economy, with a promising future for the development of BRICS countries, and at the same time, there are also challenges ahead for the BRICS members.

He urged the BRICS members to unswervingly build an open world economy, champion multilateralism and promote common development, while calling on them to push for peaceful settlement of regional conflicts and disputes.

Saying that preparations for the BRICS Summit in Xiamen are going smoothly, Xi added that he expected to make joint efforts with the other BRICS members to achieve fruitful outcomes, deepen BRICS cooperation, offer new solutions to improve global governance and contribute to global economic growth.

Attending the 7th Meeting of BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues on July 28 in Beijing, Xi stressed that China proposes the international community to make joint endeavor in promoting world economy onto a sustainable development path, and advancing economic globalization.

He also said that as long as the members follow the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation and build a closer BRICS partnership hand in hand, those countries will surely embrace the second golden decade of BRICS cooperation.

The year of 2016 marked the 10th anniversary since the establishment of the BRICS cooperation. President Xi said that the BRICS cooperation has been gradually consolidated, grown into an international mechanism of major influence and yielded fruitful results.

Xi called on the leaders of the BRICS countries to "work together for an open world" and firmly oppose protectionism in all forms.

Xi emphasized that China, as a staunch supporter and participant of the BRICS mechanism, regards the BRICS cooperation as an important direction of its diplomacy.

President Xi, together with other four countries' leaders, drafted a blueprint for economic and trade cooperation of the bloc by passing a "BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy”.

Xi said the BRICS countries should join hands to forge a closer economic partnership, push forward the construction of the headquarters and the African regional center of the New Development Bank of BRICS nations.

China also looked forward to positive outcomes on issues concerning the China-proposed Belt and Road initiative, as well as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The summit occurs as the international community tries to address challenges as making a strong recovery from the global financial crisis and mapping out a post-2015 development agenda. At the same time, the world is facing persistent political instability and conflicts in various global hot spots.

President Xi said that if the BRICS countries want to achieve peace and prosperity for their nations and people, they should "walk on two legs", emphasizing economic cooperation while at the same time strengthening coordination in the political arena.

"(The BRICS nations) should both serve as an anchor for the stability of the world economy and a shield to ensure global peace," Xi said.

President Xi hailed the significance of holding the BRICS summit for the first time on the African continent along with the first BRICS Leaders-Africa Dialogue Forum.

Xi called on all BRICS members to work hand in hand for common development while he pledged that China would strengthen cooperation with other members to make economic growth of BRICS countries more robust and their cooperation better-structured and more productive.

He also called for improving global economic governance and increasing the say and representation of BRICS countries, and urged the BRICS nations to move toward the goal of integrated markets, multi-tiered financial network, connectivity by land, air and sea, and greater cultural exchanges.
