The titular character of American author Munro Leaf's 1936 classic The Story of Ferdinand is set to appear in a new big screen adaption. Produced by Blue Sky Studios, Ferdinand opened across North America on Friday and will come to China on Jan 19.

In the original work, Ferdinand is as an unlikely young bull who prefers to lie under a tree and smell the flowers, instead of butting heads with the other calves.

The Story of Ferdinand was immensely popular at the time of its publication. Listed by Time magazine as one of the "100 Best Children's Books of All Time", it even outsold Gone with the Wind, which was first published in 1936, at one point.

When Blue Sky Studios decided to remake The Story of Ferdinand, one of their biggest challenges was fleshing out Leaf’s 800-word original into a 106-minute feature.

Brazilian director Carlos Saldanha consulted Leaf's family before adding new elements to the story. The 52-year-old Saldanha is known for his work on four Ice Age movies.

As in the book, Ferdinand grows up as a silent, peaceful young bull, who dislikes fighting and is therefore ridiculed by the other animals on the farm.

The artwork is imaginative and colorful," said The Huffington Post.
