PepsiCo, the world's leading food and beverage producer, took part in World Water Day by providing solutions for water conservation, green production and increased access to safe water in poor communities.

According to the official website of United Nations, over 663 million people are living without a supply of safe water close to home or face health problems from using contaminated water.

China, with almost 21 percent of the world's population, only has seven percent of global water resources. The water resource per capita of China equals just one fourth of the global average, ranking 109th in the world, according to the UN.

PepsiCo set goals to lower environmental impact and help protect natural resources.

By 2025, the company expects to improve the water-use efficiency of the direct agricultural supply chain in high-water-risk sourcing areas by 15 percent.

At that time, efficiency of water usage by direct manufacturing operations will also be decreased by 25 percent.

By 2025, PepsiCo Foundation and its partners aim to provide access to safe water to a total of 25 million people in the world's highest water-risk areas, with a focus on communities near where the company has operations.

Remarkable achievements have been made.

PepsiCo was certified as "green plants" by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, thanks to its reduction of water and energy consumption by 20 percent — more than the standard level of the industry.

In 2012, the company cooperated with another food and beverage giant, Tingyi (Cayman Islands) Holding Corp, to found a strategic alliance in the Chinese market.

The alliance has been awarded energy and water conservation accolades, receiving around half of the total awards presented by the China Beverage Industry Association from 2012 to 2017.

PepsiCo introduced dripping and sprinkling irrigation technologies to potato farms in China, reducing water consumption by up to 50 percent compared to the traditional model of flood irrigation.

The Ministry of Agriculture and PepsiCo have co-hosted three training sessions on sustainable agriculture and potato farm management in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region from 2013 to 2016.

PepsiCo helped to expand access to safe water for people in need.

Between 2006 and 2016, PepsiCo has delivered access to safe water to more than 11 million people, in conjunction with the PepsiCo Foundation and its global partners.

In its 17-year of cooperation with the China Women's Development Foundation, PepsiCo employees have donated more than 55 million yuan ($8.68 million).

The donations have helped to build more than 2,300 water cellars, fund construction or upgrading of more than 200 small-scale water supply facilities, conduct 125 safe water projects in schools and train nearly 180,000 people in rural areas.
