The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, who will be the fifth in line to the British throne, Kensington Palace has announced on Monday.

The boy, a brother for Prince George and Princess Charlotte, was born in the Lindo Wing of London's St Mary's Hospital on Monday at 11:01 am, weighing 8lb 7oz (3.8 kg), after the duchess went into labor earlier in the morning.

Before driving home from hospital with the new baby, Prince William joked with photographers that he and Kate would have "Thrice worry now!"

The baby's royal title will be HRH Prince of Cambridge and he is the queen's sixth great-grandchild.

An official announcement from Kensington Palace said his father, the Duke of Cambridge, was present for the birth, and the duchess and her new son were both "doing well".

The young prince's elder brother and sister arrived and visited the newborn shortly after his birth and the royal family was said to be overjoyed to welcome its newest member.

The news of the latest addition to the royal family comes less than a month before the duke's brother, Prince Harry, is due to marry Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle on May 19.

Here are five interesting facts you need to know about the royal birth:

Formal Notice

Kensington Palace announced the baby's arrival in a statement shortly after 1pm and a formal notice of the birth was placed in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace on an ornate golden easel.

The public proclamation — on foolscap paper set in a dark wooden frame — used to be handwritten, but is now typed.

It will remain in place for around 24 hours. The practice of posting a bulletin announcing a royal birth has gone on for at least as long as Buckingham Palace has been the Sovereign's official residence — since 1837.

Town crier

The news was announced to the world outside the Lindo Wing by an "independent" town crier who'd waited all month for the big moment.

The self-proclaimed Royalist announced the birth by saying "God save the Queen". He drew cheers from the crowd of royal watchers outside the hospital.

Royal enthusiast Tony Appleton, 81, got the train to London from Essex this morning when he heard that Kate Middleton had gone into labor.

Although Mr Appleton has no official relationship with the royal family he did announce the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The town crier used to be the source of all news on behalf of everyone in the community.

Lindo Wing

It is of little surprise the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have once again selected the exclusive maternity ward at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, central London, for the birth of their third child.

Prince George, four, and Princess Charlotte, two, were also born in the private wing, as were Prince William, 36, and Prince Harry, 33.

With its gourmet menu, luxury toiletries and personalized care, The Lindo Wing offers a quality of service which very few will ever have the chance to experience.

The prices at the luxury are fairly high, starting at £5,900 for a one-night stay — rising to £6,275 for a deluxe package and even higher for the ward's suites.

Name of the royal boy

Kensington Palace said the baby's name would be "announced in due course", but Arthur is already the favorite with punters, according to bookmakers.

After William and Kate opted for the traditional names George and Charlotte for their first two children, Arthur — one of William's father's middle names — is the favorite, then Albert, Frederick, James and Philip.

Whichever name the Duke and Duchess choose, it will first need to be cleared with Queen Elizabeth II, though ultimately the final decision rests with the parents.

Grand celebration

It is anticipated that the rest of the family, including the proud grandparents, will meet their grandson at Kensington Palace tomorrow.

Celebrities and politicians have been sending their best wishes to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on social media.

Prime Minister Theresa May sent her "warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their baby boy."

The sailors of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines also sent their best wishes and congratulations to Kensington Palace by lining up to create the word "boy!" on the deck of the vessel.

Tower Bridge in London has been illuminated in blue in support for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they welcome their new baby boy.

Other iconic landmarks have also been lit up blue for the occasion.
