Having seen quite a few South American art, both traditional and contemporary, I didn't expect to see something unexpected when I was informed of a new exhibition on Uruguay at the National Art Museum.

But I was wrong. I'm far from truly understanding the cultural diversity and dynamics of South America.

For example at this exhibition through May 5, I bumped into several cute little things that have expanded my knowledge of the continent on the other side of the world.

Who made them? The Guarani people.

Their ancestors had lived on the continent before Portuguese and Spanish immigrants established colonial rule in the 15th century.

The indigenous population today inhabit in Uruguay and its bordering countries Argentina and Brazil. They immigrate a lot, although, their rich customs, language and lifestyle are well preserved.

One of Guarani's cultural heritages is hand-made decorative objects, such as these miniature wooden sculptures. And the vivid paintings on them remind me of those similarity imaginative handicraft items in Northwestern China.

These are two of my favorites at the exhibition, a bird box and an owl box.

Speaking of South America, here come jolly tango dancers~

In Guarani's communities, people of different ages participate in handicraft manufacturing, and these items are produced for day-to-day life, religious ceremonies and trades.

Some are carved and painted on burned pumpkin skins.

There are also products of wool and cow leather.
