狗主人,别再给爱狗群体招黑了 | Uncivilized dog walker shames whole group

张周项 李磊 CHINADAILY 2020-08-25

"The dog is like my son. Why did you kick him?"

A 31-year-old man surnamed Jin uttered these words before hitting a female neighbor surnamed Xu because his unchained dog frightened the woman's kid, sparking a quarrel.

Jin pushed Xu onto a car's hood and beat her. As the victim tried to escape, he started beating her again. He assaulted her so badly that he broke one of her fingers.

On Tuesday, three days after the incident happened, the local police in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province said they had detained Jin on suspected criminal charges.

According to Xu's post, she was taking a walk in her community with her 3-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son on Saturday evening, when suddenly the dog started barking at her son.

She tried to shoo the dog away, when Jin appeared and started a verbal fight, she posted. The conversation soon turned violent.

Xu alleged that she attempted to leave for her children's sake after Jin slapped her in the face and punched on her head, but was stopped and attacked by him again.

The medical certificate Xu posted online shows that a finger on her left hand had suffered a fracture.

Xu said in the post that she was engaged in the IT industry and a constant keyboard user. The injury on her hand has seriously affected her work.

The incident provoked anger nationwide. While many non-dog-raisers blamed him for the illegal deeds on domestic social networks, quite a number of dog owners also criticized him for "having ruined the image of dog owners everywhere".

"Jin has betrayed the interests of all dog owners", wrote Lucky Brother, a micro blogger, "I have a dog and I really dislike those who walk dogs unleashed. Sometimes even I am afraid of unleashed dogs."

"I cannot understand how this dog owner dare call his dog his 'son'. All his deeds are tainting the image of dogs, not only his, but also those of other people," wrote Crystal Shining on micro blog.

And another quote, its source anonymous, went viral again: "Sometimes a person behaves worse than his dog."

"It is psychologically a quite normal phenomenon for people to treat dogs and cats like children, because they are both cute and willing to act intimately with human owners," says an article on guokr.com, China's most influential pop-science website, "But it is distorted psychology if one loves pets but hates humans."

In Xixin Doggie Club, a WeChat group of dog raisers in Xixin Community, Beijing, another dog owner, nicknamed "Taotao", complained: "I always walk my dog on a leash, and the children in my community will play with it. After the incident in Hangzhou, some children even stay away from my dog. What have I done wrong? It is the uncivilized dog owner's fault, not mine!"

"Do not forget this is a case of public security in essence," Luo Longping, a lawyer on criminal affairs at Beijing-based Jingsh Law Firm, said, "It is time to strictly enforce the law so that people will solve problems with words, not fists."

According to the news release of Hangzhou police, Jin might face criminal charges soon, he added. Hopefully the penalties he gets will teach him a lesson, and help remind all pet owners nationwide to raise pets responsibly.
