A report from Legal Daily exposed a peculiar online service on Aug 17 which offers assistance criticizing Lin Youyou, a controversial character in the TV drama Nothing But Thirty. The character faced anger from audiences for interfering with others' marriage.
The service, which has been removed from online shops, was labeled as a product on both secondhand trading platforms and Taobao with a price of 10 yuan. According to web users' screenshots, customers can choose from three different types of cursing: "accepting your complaints" mode, "let's curse together" mode and "I help you call names" mode.
Interestingly, the description of the product noted buyers should purchase the service only for the sake of entertainment and shouldn't launch personal attacks on the actress herself.
Because of her portrayal of the much-hated figure, actress Zhang Yue has been under fire, receiving buckets of ire from netizens in comments below her Weibo posts. Sellers with strong business sense turned this into profit.
Some think the innovative service is a good way to vent their anger, while others believe people shouldn't take the plot seriously and use such harsh words on a fictional character. Song Hongyu, a lawyer with Taihetai Law Firm, told Red Star News the activity is acceptable only if the cursing service can put an end to meaningless verbal attacks, but would be illegal if people go beyond and harass the real-life actress.
