女孩轻生溺亡,不妨等待调查真相丨Lessons for cops from suicide incident

12月4日,安徽望江一名女孩站在河中欲轻生,民警劝导时其忽然扑入深水区溺亡。目前四名警务人员停职接受调查,结论尚未做出。

A video showing a teenaged girl trying to commit suicide in Wangjiang, Anhui province, while two policemen standing nearby on the river banks try to dissuade her from going deeper into the water has gone viral.

The girl is seen ignoring their pleas and rushing into deeper water, struggling there. The video ends showing the policemen calling for back-up, more policemen arriving and forming a chain by holding hands to rescue the girl. Reports said the girl died from drowning.

The tragedy on Friday triggered fierce discussions on social networking sites. Some blamed the police for acting too slowly, while others defended them, saying their lives should be cherished, not sacrificed for others.

The local police responded saying a police officer and three auxiliary officers had been suspended pending investigation into their handling of the incident.

The rescue mission was without doubt a failure. The police arrived in time but could not dissuade the girl against taking her life; When she rushed into deeper water, they failed to save her in time.

Some argue that policemen should stay safe first while helping others, but that's impossible. Policemen are indeed trained to help others whose lives might be in danger, but it is not possible for them to save lives without endangering their own lives.

But that does not mean their lives should be ignored. they have families of their own. If they die while trying to save others, then their families too will be in mourning. While the State will definitely take care of their families if they die in the line of duty, we hope that is never the case. Also, it is not wise to blame the police for failing to save the girl's life. Instead, everyone should wait for the investigation report.

While the lives that are lost cannot come back, lessons can be learned from this incident. In the future, when handling such cases, the police center should consider sending officers who can swim and also equip the force with devices to help them save lives. This way both civilian as well as police lives can be saved.
