"The title “troposphere” refers to the lowest part of the earth’s atmosphere in which the majority of the earth's active weather forms. In this regard, the troposphere is something that all men share, and the “world” we talk about often refers to the “world” within the troposphere. Troposphere is no longer merely a term in the ecological sense, it also represents an appeal for cultural exchanges, especially among countries like China and Brazil which share a lot in common and have a solid foundation for mutual understanding. Troposphere features 21 contemporary artists from Brazil. Their ages vary. So do the media they deal with. What they share in common is that their art addresses the history and/or the present of Brazil. Through their work, we will have more insights into the society, culture and people of Brazil. On the other hand, the participating artists together with the works constitute, in a way, a brief history of Brazilian contemporary art, casting light on the different styles and genres characterizing Brazilian contemporary art. It helps us to have a better understanding of the practice of Brazilian artists during the past few decades under the influence of Tropicalismo, their exploration and enquiry into local experience as well as their pondering and reflection upon the cultural identity of their own. The exhibition also features 21 contemporary artists from China, trying to build an intuitive connection between art from the two countries in terms of the use of materials, visual styles, approaches, problem awareness, social representation and historical narrative. Through the presentation of what artists from the two countries share, the exhibition intends to further stimulate the awareness of mutual community. With an attempt to “seek common ground”, the different features and tendencies between contemporary art from the two countries would be interpreted in a more profound way so that we may be able to address the issue of multicenter in today’s globalized context more properly and confidently.

ABOUT ARTIST & EXHIBITED WORK

André Komatsu was born in São Paulo in 1978, where he still lives and works today. Komatsu describes his work as the reflex of a series of perceptions he has while going along roads and through urban spaces. The objects and materials that converge to form Komatsu’s artistic universe are, aside from appearances, invitations to social resistance. Starting from fragments, rubble, abandoned objects, the artist carries out a reconstruction in search of new models of existence. The artist also dwells on the relationship between the parts of a structure, on its chances of surviving and on its inevitable transformation over time. The recurrent use by the artist of fragments, scrap pieces, found materials, and their reuse, expresses a desire to subvert the values conventionally attributed to materials, and, in a broad sense, to the elements of everyday life. Komatsu deals with themes of regeneration, focussing particularly on the physical redevelopment of urban space as a wider metaphor for “… man, nature or architecture in a continuous process of change”.

His earliest works and performances tend towards a fairly literal interpretation of these interests by, for example, re-purposing the “… materials of construction and deconstruction” into platforms for drawing, painting, and assemblage. His current production, however, is more complex both spatially and conceptually.
