Back when post-rock was still in its blissfully innocent infancy, one of the many bands that sprouted was Ef. Sailing through the past two decades with what is now a backlog of five records, each with its own characteristic beauty, at some point about six years ago, the band went silent. Speaking of this silence, the band chalks it up to something that can be pretty much summed up as the fact that life just happens sometimes. That’s totally understandable. However, it does seem that the pandemic-induced static permanence has stoked the fires of creativity, leading the members to write new material.
Ef are returning to us with a record that’s called We Salute You, You and You!, and is out on November 4 via NEW NOISE. Retaining the soul of the band with a visually eliciting and lush sound, this particular song drifts into something epic that doesn’t need to be thunderous to attain that feel. It stays anthemic without feeling forced, or too large to digest. It’s cinematic without the insanely demanding structure and length.
As we see the band play in the video, overlapped with natural landscapes and other wistful imagery, it makes all the sense. The demeanor of the music is as effortless and beautiful as nature. It doesn’t need to do anything else – it simply is.
Between 2006 and 2013 Ef was one of the bands on top of their game.
It's been nine years since the last Ef album so far, and now the Swedish post-rock band greet us with old strengths and the usual devotion.The band from Gothenburg contributed their part to the post-rock high of the (late) 00s with orchestral compositions, fragile vocals and loud outbursts. Increasing age, family commitments and jobs were prioritized in recent years keeping the instruments in the rehearsal room often remain untouched. The pandemic helped Ef get back together and write new songs, mostly building on old strengths. In addition to the classic rock elements, Ef's post-rock sound includes strings, wind instruments, a piano and subtly used vocals, which this time - in English and Swedish. The most versatile track in the band's history ends the album in just under ten minutes: Half of "Chambers" sounds like a loud-quiet post-rock song, but then it drifts surprisingly jazzy with a trumpet, before the song with a pounding beat and screams dies make the next U-turn. Even after a long period of silence Ef do what they do best, putting emotions into music and delivering great album after great album.
