Stephan Balkenhol（史蒂芬·巴尔肯霍尔,1957年）1957年出生于德国黑森州，是德国当前最具代表性的雕塑家。1976年至1982年间他在汉堡造型艺术学院学习雕塑，深受艺术家Ullrich Ruckriem的教导，受到抽象 、简约和八十年代中期概念的影响，其作品围绕人物形象而展开，以其别开生面的具象的人物雕塑而著名。
Balkenhol 一直都在探索通过日常可见的材料用新的创作方式与表达方式完成自己的作品，他的作品大部分使用未经加工的木头材料，并在创作保持木材的凹槽、裂缝、缺口等原貌，作品则要表达人类最典型最真实的表情与特征。

出于对将人体形象重新引入当代艺术的兴趣，他的第一个人物造型创造于1983年。受到埃及、罗马和希腊古典传统雕像的启发，其雕塑将男性或女性裸体呈现在木质底座上。自八十年代中期， Balkenhol 将那些古典雕塑的神话人物换成普通男女，并为每个人命名。这种与圣灵的断裂充分表达了 Balkenhol 的艺术观— 在他的世界里，任何人都有资格被放在供奉神明或祭奠英雄的高台上。为了彻底有别于神话人物或传统圣像，他塑造了主角人物完全静态的、无宗教特征的姿态，还试图掩盖了任何可以暴露人物职业生活或社会地位的标志性信息。

Stephan 最著名的作品要数书本大小厚度的平面雕塑，他将人物半身像雕刻在一块小巧的木头上，作品中既可以看到木材纹路与雕刻留下的粗糙痕迹，但在粗糙中又能看到对人物眼神表情的传神刻画，搭配典雅平淡的色调，让观者过目难忘。
