The newly opened Guangfo Metro line, running between Guangzhou and Foshan, is now offering password-free Wi-Fi, according to our friends at GD Today.

The new Wi-Fi service was launched on April 24 and is fast enough – at 1Mbps – for commuters to steam video, download music and e-books and browse the web efficiently.

Aside from trains, the wireless Internet service also covers tunnels, platforms, station halls and parking areas, according to reports.

In response to concerns that the Wi-Fi signal may inhibit the train signal and cause delays, Zhong Quan, the General Manager of Guangfo Metro Company said, “The Wi-Fi signal and train signal of Guangfo metro line are in different frequency band, so that they won’t interfere with each other, which will ensure the traffic safety.”

The Guangzhou Metro is aiming to have free Wi-Fi implemented by the end of the year through a joint project with Shenzhen-based company Southern Galaxy Valley, according toGD Today. Select Guangzhou Metro lines were expected to have free internet service by July of last year, although that appears to have been an overly-optimistic estimate.

Guangzhou’s free Wi-Fi project is pegged to cost RMB200 million (USD32.3 million).
