 Return to Nature

Written by Helen Brechlin

I went into these paintings trying to gather my personal thoughts and experiences with Beijing. The first being the sheer size of the city, which is undeniably gargantuan. As I explored I found myself drawn to the parks within the city. They were an unexpected break from the hectic tone of the modern urban hustle outside the walls - clearly dividing the old slow life of the city and the current buzzing hive that it has become. I couldn’t stop thinking about the juxtaposition of the two. How they were both at odds with other each, deep contrasts, but they also melded together to form what we call Beijing today. Both are inherently Beijing, but vastly different.

I set out to have the paintings capture that feeling of the fight between the two. My initial focus was on the pollution from the industry and its effects on the natural world. Then my practice became very intuitive, a departure from my previous calculated work back in Boston of working from observation with some invention. In Beijing, I allowed the paintings to formulate themselves with me responding to the unusual high key colors added to the palette and loose marks and gave way to their desires. From this, a new world formed, one which I read as a Beijing post humans. It is a Beijing where nature has reclaimed, but has been permanently effected by man’s past presence. This has caused irregular colorations and formations and a new toxic sky to emerge.

The parks have been my favorite part of this adventure - a refuge from daily life. I like the idea of allowing them to have their turn once again to be free to grow as they please.
