New Taiwanese Bakery Zeroll Rolls Confidently into Sanlitun SOHO
After its opening in the middle of May, Zeroll has made a confident mark among its brethren on the ground floor of Sanlitun SOHO's Building 2. We went for a visit right after peak lunch hours on a weekday to see what this new bakery is cooking up.
Upon walking in, it's clear they mean business: there is a huge baking area with huge ovens, and several cooks were caught in the act. Two shelves display around 20 different types of bread and several seats line the window.
Under the motto "you are what you eat," Zeroll claims to only use imported flour from Canada. Zeroll originates from Taiwan, and want to promote their European-style bread to a larger Chinese audience. The breads are delicious and chunky, weighing in at around 350 to 500 grams.
From all their offerings, they recommended their Pear Fig (RMB 28), Cheese Three-D (RMB 22), Orange Coco, and Matcha Banana Milk (RMB 28). When asked further, we were told that “[pear] is good for your lungs in traditional Chinese medicine, thus this bread is the best for people who live in a polluted city.” The loaf we tried was a little chewy and not overly sweet, with clear flavors of grounded fig and raisins.
Cheese Three-D (RMB 22) is nice
We couldn't help but try the Cheese Three-D, and much to our delight, it was extremely cheesy.
To wash it all down we bought a matcha banana milk, which looks a little green, but since we survived the green burger at McDonald’s we were feeling pretty invincible and finished the smoothie without a second thought.
Zeroll do not use preservatives in their breads, which means that these fresh breads aren't meant to last and only have a shelf life of approximately three days. While not a problem for the smaller rolls, this could prove an issue when buying larger loaves, unless that is you have a hungry army at your disposal.
All in all, we were pretty impressed. Zeroll could be a trusty bakery on the way to work if their quality is maintained through time.
