Don't Pass By the Pizzas at this Nanluogu Xiang Favorite

2016-10-18 Robynne theBeijinger

Few of Beijing's food and beverage venues can boast the sticking power of Nanluogu Xiang stalwart Pass By Bar, which has been offering craft beer, coffee, and a casual atmosphere to tourists and locals alike since 1999, long before the Nanluogu Xiang area became the seething mass of humanity it is today.

But it is Pass By's pizzas that really keep people coming back for more, particularly their long-time signature: the kungpao chicken pizza. Yes, you read that right, kungpao chicken pizza. In a 2014 interview with the Beijinger's Kyle Mullin, Pass By owner Hai Yan described how one of the bar's regular customers commented that making standard pizzas in China was boring and that she should try incorporating Chinese ingredients or dishes. Hai Yan thought about how so many of her customers said that they liked a plate of good old gongbao jiding and the kungpao chicken pizza was born. After the kungpao chicken earned a positive response, she decided to continue her fusion experiments, adding a lamb chuan'r pizza and a spicy Sichuan mala sausage pizza.

The more than 5,300 Dianping reviews of Pass By (a frankly mind-boggling number) rave about the fusion pizzas, which feature crusts that fall somewhere in between thick and thin, and are available in 10 and 12-inch sizes.

Finally, a note for Dianping users: pay through the Dianping app and you can get 5 percent off your total bill at Pass By. Delivery is also available within 3km of the bar via Dianping.

Voting is now open in this year's Pizza Cup. Read the voting process here or head straight to the voting page by scanning/extracting the QR code below. Voting for this round closes on October 20 (Thursday) at 2pm.
