Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz is a musical written by Stephen Schwartz based on the book by Winnie Holzman.
Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University; the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.
Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroad and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future.
Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked celebrated its 10th anniversary on Broadway on October 30, 2013. On December 4, 2016, Wicked performed its 5,462nd performance with a 2pm matinee, making Wicked the ninth longest-running Broadway show, surpassing Beauty and the Beast’s record. A typical performance runs for approximately two hours and 30 minutes, plus a 15-minute intermission.
The original Broadway production of Wicked was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2004, including Best Musical; Book; Orchestrations; Original Score; Choreography; Costume Design; Lighting Design; Scenic Design while receiving two nominations for Best Actress and one of them winning the award. The show also won the Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design, notably losing Best Book, Original Score, and ultimately Best Musical to Avenue Q. The same year, the show won six Drama Desk Awards out of 11 nominations, including Outstanding Musical, Book, Director and Costume Design in addition to winning four Outer Critics Circle Awards out of 10 nominations. The original Broadway cast recording also received the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The success of the Broadway production has spawned several sister productions worldwide, including various North American productions, a long-running Laurence Olivier Award–nominated West End production and a series of international productions. Now the international tour of Wicked will begin its first journey in Beijing on May 20.
