[VIDEO]: Watch BJ Expats Identify Local Burgers

2017-05-08 Tom A. theBeijinger

The challenge: a simple one. The reason: a tasty one. The competitors: a special bunch, to be sure.

In the name of all things holy and burger-like, we invited four teams of meat-in-a-bun-loving expats to battle it out in a test of strength, determination, perserverance, and ... err... tastebuds. The mission: to find out who could correctly name three local burgers – Slow Boat, Great Leap, and Home Plate – with the disadvantage of having to perform the whole task blindfolded.

To find out the results you'll have to watch the video (with subtitles) below but one thing's for sure, no one left  this experiment hungry.

If that got your juices flowing for some prime beef, hold that thought, as you'll have your chance to reenact the whole shebang once our 2017 Burger Cup rolls around on May 20-21, 11am-8pm at Galaxy Soho. More than 20 vendors are currently confirmed for our Wild West-themed burger-thon as well as a growing number drinks outlets to wash down all that protein. There'll also be performances, activities fit for all the family, and a number of booths dedicated to Beijing life.

Stay tuned in our WeChat to keep up to date with all of the burger happenings.

A special thanks go out to our guests – Kristen Lum of LumDimSum.com blog fame; David Jacobs and Gene George of Comedy Club China (comedyclubchina.com); The Paper Tigers (who just released their new EP); and Hariet Bates, PR and marketing manager for Migas, and Andrew Moo, marketing manager at Hatchery – who were game enough to slog it out in their spare time for the measly price of a free lunch, or three.

Galaxy Soho, the venue for this year's Burger Cup

This year, the burger action is moving out of 798's Universal Creative Park and heading over to Galaxy Soho, Zaha Hadid's swooping sci-fi style structure in Chaoyangmen. Take Exit H from the Chaoyangmen subway station on Lines 2 and 6, Galaxy Soho is a breeze to get to whether you're coming from the north, south, east or west. We'll have a blog with more details on how to get there nearer the time. For now, grab your tickets and sleep safe in the knowledge that you'll soon have access to the city's best burgers, all in one place.
