[VIDEO] Bungee Jump Mishap Causes Plunge Into River

2017-08-21 Charles L. theBeijinger

A Tianjin woman has escaped serious injury after she plunged several meters into a river after accidentally getting detached during a bungee jump at a Beijing scenic area.

The incident happened Friday afternoon at the Shidu Natural Park, located 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing in the city's Fangshan District.

As seen in the video below, the victim separated from the cord on the third bounce and fell into a river over which bungee jumps are made. Bystanders are heard screaming as the victim is seen plunging into the water with a splash.

Following the accident, an unidentified 17-year-old Tianjin female was taken first to Fangshan No.1 Hospital and later to the People's Liberation Army Hospital where she was described as being in stable condition without life-threatening injuries.

The management committee for the park said no problem was found with the facility's safety equipment or bungee cord, which was said to have been completely intact. Instead, the committee said the bungee cord had been set improperly; additionally, the internal inspection found that staff members were incorrectly using hand gestures when communicating with each other.

The park said the manager and workers on duty during the time of the incident have been fired.

Fangshan safety inspectors have decided to temporarily shut down the Shidu bungee jump facility as it investigates all facilities at the park.

Shidu has two bungee jumping platforms that stand 48 and 55 meters high and cost RMB 200 or 260, respectively.

Accidents involving bungee jumps have been responsible for fatalities throughout the world. Last year, a 36-year-old man died in Brazil after the cord used for his bungee jump was set too long, causing him to crash into the ground. In 2015, a British woman and a Dutch woman died in separate bungee jumps made from bridges in Spain.

Last year, the Beijinger visited Shidu Natural Park and found that although it was so commercialized that "nature is not a priority there," it was still an option for "anyone looking for an adventurous day trip outside of Beijing."
