Cococean, an Instagramable Dessert Bar for Coconut Addicts
Cococean is simply too pretty for Beijing. It would be more at-home in the more charming, artisanal Sohos of other cities like New York or London or even Hong Kong.
Yet somehow, the quaint and stylish little dessert bar has ended up tucked away in a back alley between Sanlitun Soho and the Topwin Center, like an adorable kitten found mewing in a storm drain.
A light pink neon light shines “Cococean Dessert Bar” through the gray windows, greeting visitors to the busy little shop with two huge fridges, a small counter, and shelves of sweet treats and goods. Aptly named, their desserts are coconut-centric, such as whole coconut pudding (RMB 50), and coconut pudding with duchess biscuits (RMB 22), as well as scoop cookies (RMB 10), daquoise (a dessert cake with strawberry, matcha, chocolate, coffee and cheese, RMB 16), and slow fermented yogurt (RMB 15-22). Pair your sweets with fresh coconut water (RMB 28), fresh cream Americanos, and matcha (RMB 35). After spoiling yourself with desserts on the spot, stock up your fridge at home with coconut water by the liter (RMB 80) to keep yourself hydrated.
Scoop cookies (RMB 10 per one), and scones
We recommend the scoop cookies, which look like scoops of ice cream. The chocolate and matcha-flavored ones we tried were not too sweet, but solid and rich in buttery flavor. The photogenic little balls of flour and sugar look just like tiny scoops of ice cream, but can be safely held in hand or stashed in a bag for later with no risk of a sticky, melty mess.

The scones are stars too, even if they are not sweetened. These are not the doughy and flakey English afternoon-style breads meant to be eaten with cream and jam. The scones here are smaller, denser and flavored with cheese, black tea, black chocolate and almond, matcha, and – of course – coconut. Try the black chocolate with almond (RMB 10) – sweet chocolate chips all over and almond chops to add more texture. The “coconut brothers” (main image, RMB 35) is coconut water with coconut meat and coconut pudding that you eat with a spoon and a straw from a Tiffany-blue paper cup.
Cococean has plenty of tastes and textures, and an adorably photogenic environment for you and your besties to have a selfie-saturated afternoon treat.
