Popular Peruvian Pop-Up Pachakutiq Hosts Closing Party on Nov 4

Kyle M. theBeijinger 2018-10-16

Try not to weep in your ceviche. Yes, the news is bad – Peruvian pop-up Pachakutiq has announced it will leave Sanlitun Soho by the first week of November, "popping down" at the location that it took over in the evenings from a long-running branch of Cafe Flatwhite. During its nearly year-long run in this location, Pachakutiq won over throngs of fans with authentic Peruvian fare like liquor-laden piscos, and creative twists on the region's renowned ceviche dish. It's been a family affair from the get-go, with Peruvian native Francisco Chia co-founding the pop up with his sister Maria, and together they've worked to be culinary ambassadors of their homeland, explaining the dishes' nuances to customers with impassioned charm and ample knowledge, along with coordinating numerous salsa nights and other events that made the joint a place to not only dine out but also party down.

Pachakutiq's burgeoning following will miss all that and more, but there's no need to despair entirely. That's because the Chia siblings vow to reopen elsewhere soon in their announcement. That transition shouldn't be too hard to pull off, seeing as the pop-up first started at the Cafe Flatwhite in China Central Mall in the summer of 2016 – in fact, we at the Beijinger think the fans they've amassed at Sanlitun Soho will likely follow them just about anywhere else in Beijing.

Francisco posted the closure announcement on his WeChat moments late Tuesday night (Oct 17). He later told the Beijinger that Pachakutiq will have its farewell-to-Sanlitun-Soho party on Nov 4, the details for which are still pending.

He's unsure where or when the next iteration of Pachakutiq will open. What Francisco does know, though: he doesn't want to open another pop-up. Instead, he says "For now, we will look at locations to hopefully open full-time." When asked why they're leaving Sanlitun Soho now, he said, "because we want to focus on the new location."

All that sounds promising, but with reopening dates being so up in the air, fans will have no idea how long the wait for Pachakutiq 3.0 will be. That means you'd best hurry to their soon-to-be-gone Sanlitun spot on or before Nov 4 to get your pisco and ceviche fix.

The discounts that Pachakutiq had running all summer will continue through to their "pop-down." You can read more about that in their announcement
here.
