What's Up in Beer: New Menus, Ugly Sweaters, 12 Beers of Xmas

Tom A. theBeijinger 2020-08-18

What's Up in Beer is our weekly rubdown of all things ale and suds. Lather yourself in the latest beery news, gossip, and openings all the while forgetting what exactly it was that you were meant to be doing. Don't worry, beer can fix that too.

Little Creatures Launch Their New à la Carte Menu

First up, Little Creatures are throwing a small shindig this Friday (tomorrow), Dec 14, to launch their new winter menu. For every dish you order between 5-7pm, you'll also receive a pint of Bright Ale on the house (that's worth celebrating alone). The usual happy hour will also run from 3-7pm if you want to get in the door early.

Jing-A's Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

That will be followed by Jing-A's annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party on Saturday, Dec 15. Simply bury your shame, track down and don an abomination of a pullover, and enjoy happy hour prices on all beers and cocktails from 2-7pm. They'll also release their holiday seasonal brew, the Jing-A-Ling Celebration Ale, a warming dark-spiced Belgian Ale (as well as RMB 50 mulled wine and ciders). If you happen upon some in-good-shape clothing or household goods while you're rummaging for your ugly sweater, bring it along and give it to Roundabout who'll be on hand to give it to those in need. For full guidelines on what types of donations are useful, check roundaboutchina.com/donate.

As well as the aforementioned Celebration Ale, the team has two new collab beers on tap: one made with Danish brewers To Øl dubbed Made in China (available as of Friday, pictured above) and a dry Puffed Rice Brut IPA with Nanjing's Master Gao. On top of that, they've got a new holiday gift box with six beers and a bottle opener for RMB 128, available for pickup at the brewpub or delivered through their WeChat.

Ramo Goes Haus of Lily

Ramo takes a walk on the wild side with a special Christmas-themed performance by TigerLily and her 10 "Ho Ho Hoes" this Friday, Dec 14 at 10pm. RMB 80 tickets include entrance, a shot at the door, and a Haus of Lily holiday cookie. There'll also be all-night drink specials of RMB 30 pints of Slow Boat's Zombie Pirate Pale Ale.

Great Leap's 12 Beers of Christmas Charity Drive

Great Leap has launched their fourth consecutive annual holiday season charity drive, titled the 12 Beers of Christmas. As with previous years, the brewery will select a "charity beer" for each day between Dec 14 and Dec 25 and donate RMB 10 of every glass of that beer drank on that day. This year, they'll be supporting Shepherd's Field Children's Village, which provides a safe haven for at-risk, special-needs orphans and has cared for more than 4,000 orphaned children since its founding in 2006. Donations will go towards medical care, surgery, education, vocational training, and homes for these orphans.

Boxing Cat Brewery Celebrates Their 10th Year Anniversary

On Saturday, Dec 15, Boxing Cat celebrates their 10 year anniversary, shortly after moving into their permanent Beijing digs. The party starts at 8.30pm and includes the launch of their Sugar Daddy Imperial Porter for the occasion, a dessert porter with creme brulee notes. There'll also be DJs, paired snacks, and a raffle with a top prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to visit their Wuhan-based brewing facilities.

Slow Boat Christmas Vouchers Now on Sale

Slow Boat is now selling gift vouchers and branded gear. Items include Slow Boat tote bags, mugs, and tees, and freshly-canned crowlers as well as RMB 100, 350 (for the cost of RMB 300), and 600 (for the cost of RMB 500) denomination vouchers. Finally, on Dec 19, enjoy 25 percent off cases of Monkey's Fist IPA via Slow Boat's Weidian as well as a pass to their monthly brewery tour.
