While most Gongti
clubs remain closed for the Two Sessions, Lantern trucks on, first
breaking in their newly Funktion-One soundsystem (pictured above) on
Thursday (tonight). Then on Friday, they'll be hosting a night dedicated to Forma,
a new label based out of Beijing that "aims to explore the connection
that unconsciously links music with multiple forms of art." More of the
usual then? Not so! Forma will focus on "detailed, deep, and
minimalistic rhythms [that] are put to sight through visual art ...
combined to deliver an immersive experience with a neutral balance." The
usual Lantern crew will man Room 1, while Forma DJs Nigls, Nicolai
Zellmani, and Zhiqi head up Room 2.
RMB 50. 10.30pm doors. Lantern
Juhstynn and
Tanner, AKA the boys behind Beijing-based promoter Suanpan, man the
decks for a night-long session at Zhao Dai this Friday. Expect house,
techno, and disco cuts designed to help usher in the sights and sounds
of spring.
Price TBA. 10pm. Zhao Dai

This isn't club
night as such, as things get cerebral over at the Goethe-Institut with a
discussion about the role of clubs in affecting social change, as an
open space for free expression. The evening is composed of four
discussions that will break down and compare the history of clubbing culture
in Berlin and Beijing. In German and Chinese only.
Free. 5-7pm. Goethe-Institut
Co-founder of
Berlin's Lebensfreude Records, Zuckermann splits his time between the
German capital, Hong Kong, and now Beijing, "mixing up a kaleidoscope of
improvisational sounds including jazz, classical and 20th-century
modernism. Support comes from HWA (Elvis T.), Juliana Lima, Zhang Jie,
Kimo, and Jackson Lee.
RMB 50. 10.30pm doors. Lantern
Aida of
TechNOrules returns to Aurora, this time inviting PENG label's
up-and-coming DJ Sunk and Get Connected label boss Juliana Lima. The
former credits post-rock as a major influence, working that genre's
delicate textures into her house, tech house, and minimal techno sets.
Free. 10pm. Aurora
